A followup to the story of that BP station in Atlanta, Georgia selling six-buck-a-gallon gas...

CBS News report.

It was a stunt...according to the interview, the station's manager priced the fuel so steep to discourage people from filling up in order to protect his supply. He could have closed his station, but did not want to shut out anyone desperately needing fuel and willing to pay his extortion-level rate.

The same report also highlighted one station raising prices three times in a day, which is illegal.

I just paid 3.19 per gallon in Moline Illinois. It's almost 20 cents cheaper on the other side of the Mississippi (where I was headed to pick up film), but I was too low already to risk crossing the bridge [Mad]

What can you do. On days I don't have to do the deposit or pick up film I might just start riding my bike to work.

Gasis up appx .25 in California - hovering between 2.89 and 3.09 depending on the station. Its ironic that California is now cheaper than a lot of the nation - but - none of the west coast relied on any of the distribution channels in the east..

My advice, every day you take out the car, fill it up again on your way home. Supplies will get very short very soon, as our usage is matched by our output. With our output down, our supplies will get seemingly streched. Prices will keep going up for a while, and most people just aren't going to conserve, mostly for the same reason they didn't leave new orleans when they were warned to.... "it isn't going to happen to me".

I have a full tank of gas, I am using my car sparingly, and even if I only put in a gallon a day, it keeps it full. I am taking the cautious approach, just in case.

Or maybe I am just paranoid, or crazy... could be possible.

So Tim, are you seeing a domino effect for you drivers hauling commodies in having to charge more to the sellers to where they'll have to raise prices to compensate them, then wages will have to increase to compensate the actual customer, then the customers are ready to leap over the cliff like those lemmings do due to a sudden madness attack?

Also, why has diesel suddenly become the most expensive fuel, to where many moons ago it was the cheapest - why GM went apeshit crazy in converting 350CID engines to run diesel on a quick design (and not changing the cam drive chain to handle the extreme cylinder pressure, thus busting cams like toothpicks) in the early 80's?

I'm guessing it's because gasoline is becoming more valuable so the refineries are producing more gasoline per barrel of oil at the expense of diesel thus lowering the supply of diesel (and increasing the price).

Whaddya know Dave, I paid just that for premium in Midland last night. $115 to fill my car... yippee! I think I'll go back to driving my SUV (just for Randy! [Big Grin]

) which gets better gas millage and can currently be filled for $75.

Anyway... 20 people showed up at the drive-in on bicycles tonight, and we're probably a good 8km from most houses in town.

This is supposed to be behind fears of a short-term aviation fuel shortage, too: basically, refineries can expect to sell gasoline for roughly twice as much as jet fuel, so they're concentrating production on gasoline. If a jet fuel shortage does actually happen, then presumably the law of supply and demand will sort out the imbalance.

I guess I am paranoid also, I refill about every other day. I would also rather just put in 10-15 bucks in a few times a week instead of 50-60 bucks in at a time. That just seems not quite as much to me, for some strange reason.

(I'll help the newbies on this one. LL=Low Lead 100 octane)

Quite a jump for avfuel from one state to another.

My father, who has his own airplane, fills up on 100LL for about $3.55/gal here in Idaho. I remember when 100 used to be close to 2 bucks a gallon when regular fuel was hitting a buck and a quarter per gallon.

I more or less just keep an eye on diesel prices cause that's what I drive. A week ago diesel was at 2.45 the cheapest I saw and currently the cheapest I have seen is 2.75. Not bad considering it actually had the smallest price jump compared to regular gas which jumped on average .50. It went from being the same price as mid to high end gas to being less then the low end gas.

$4.89, ouch! It might get expensive soon to fill up my lawn mower. Oh wait, it only takes 8 litres... I guess I won't have no settle for that unleaded stuff anytime soon. [Smile]

I just put in seven gallons last night. I got busy and didnt hit the tank for a few days. I use premium, so I spent, 3.07 per gallon. Twenty one dollars used to fill up my sixteen gallon tang. Now it wont even do it half way. We aren't even at the peak yet.

I agree that filling up more frequently takes out the sting of the sticker shock. I will fill up tomorrow just before work too. Three times a week will keep the sticker price at about ten bucks, so it is less of an emotional shock.
