My wallet took a bit of punishment from a recent week-long stay in Colorado visiting family. I drove up on Labor Day weekend. I filled up in Lawton with 87 octane gas for $2.79 per gallon. Topped off the tank of my pickup (about 11 gallons worth) in Dumas, TX for $2.89 per gallon. Made it to the 'Springs area with plenty of gas to spare. But my jaw fell agape at the signs in Trinidad, CO selling gas for $3.19 per gallon -and that's for 85 octane methanol.

When driving into Colorado Springs, at about 2:30am, there was something of a small riot happening at a 7-Eleven along US-24. Thanks to restrictive sign ordinances, most gas price changers in that area are low to the ground well within arms reach. It seemed someone decided to remove and replace some digits to make it appear like regular unleaded cost only 99 cents a gallon. Cars were backed up all over the place. I was lucky to get around it. Good thing too. Much longer behind the wheel and I would have fallen asleep.

On the way back, gas had fallen about a dime. I topped off the tank with that 85 octance stuff for $2.88 per gallon. I saw the same prices almost all the way back to Lawton. Here, gas was down to $2.79 per gallon -where the price remains today.

But I did pick up something on the trip. I paid a visit to an REI store in Colorado Springs and picked up a pretty nice Novara Ponderosa FS bicycle on sale. It's the coolest bicycle I've ever owned. I'm now using the bike to get some exercise and to commute back and forth to work. I haven't had to drive my truck all week. That's a nice little FU to the oil companies and oil futures speculators.

Inventor denies dead cat fuel story

"It's an alternative fuel that is friendly for the environment. But it's complete nonsense to suggest dead cats. I've never used cats and would never think of that. At most the odd toad may have jumped in."

Bild on Tuesday wrote a headline: "German inventor can turn cats into fuel -- for a tank he needs 20 cats." The paper on Wednesday followed up with a story entitled: "Can you really make fuel out of cats?"

A spokesman for Bild told Reuters the story was meant to show that cat remains could "in theory" be used to make fuel with Koch's patented method.

The author of the story said Koch had never told him directly that he had used dead cats as the story implied.

The Web site of Koch's firm, "Alphakat GmbH", says his patented "KDV 500" machine can produce what he calls the "bio-diesel" fuel at about 23 euro cents (30 cents) a liter, which is about one-fifth the price at petrol stations now.

"I drive my normal diesel-powered car with this mixture," Koch is quoted saying in Bild, next to a large picture of a kitten. "I have gone 170,000 km (106,000 miles) without a problem."

Heard on the news this morning that some places in London have reduced prices by four pence per litre, so the recent rises seem to have been a short term thing.

I've just got back from my US west coast trip. The impression I got is that California remains expensive ($3ish in Los Angeles, $3.10-$3.20ish in Santa Barbara and San José), while most gas stations in Oregon and Washington are significantly cheaper - $2.80 seemed to be about the average.

Gosh Leo, I always thought that fur, like hair, didn't decompose and therefore had NO fuel value but just tended to clog up the conversion system.

I would think a naked/skinned cat would be of the optimum value as his fuel source?

Monday 'round here, most gas stations were charging $2.49 per gallon for 87 octane. The prices fell to $2.39 for the same grade yesterday. Sam's Club was selling gas (member card required) for $2.35.

Today things are different, thanks to Hurricane Rita churning away in the Gulf. Stations are now in the process of raising prices by as much as 30 cents per gallon. We could be back over $3 per gallon by the weekend. Depending on how bad the Houston area gets smacked (particularly all those big oil and gas refineries around Texas City) we could be looking at $4 or $5 per gallon gasoline.

I sometimes get the feeling the oil people don't REALLY see a huge increase in costs....they just raise the prices and blame it on the hurricane or the whatever. Then people are used to higher prices, so they just leave it that way.

Last night on Bill O'Rielley he mentioned that if you work the math in reverse that for a gallon of gas to cost 3.00 the barrel of crude wold have to cost over 90.00!

Driving around tonight showed a great difference in gas prices.

They ranged from $2.69 to $2.36 for unleaded regular. (Unfortunatly, my wife's Acura requires premium...says so in the manual) These are some of the lowest prices since pre-Katrina.

Usually prices are exactly the same all over the area, but they are quite varied right now.

Filled up w/prem tonight (due to hurricane panic wiping out the gas supply) for 2.59, same price as regular.
