Author Topic: Gas Prices in your area Leo Enticknap Film God Posts: 7474 From: Loma Linda, CA Registered: Jul 2000 posted 08-20-2005 05:07 AM                        I'm sure that a scheme like that would be very popular in a number of British cities, where the cost of running a car is much greater than in suburbs or rural areas. In some parts of London, renting a parking space or garage can easily set you back four figures a year, and then there's the £8 'congestion charge' you have to pay to drive in the city centre during weekdays. The last time I lived in London (over a decade ago now, admittedly), I commuted into town by train and my car did nothing for about 6 days a week. I'm sure that the same is true of most private cars parked in the inner city area. I've got one friend in York who doesn't own a car but hires one for occasional weekends away and so on. The only problem she finds is that the rental companies demand extra insurance payments to take account of the fact that she doesn't drive regularly. I guess this raises the safety issue of people driving around crowded roads in busy traffic who have not been behind the wheel for months beforehand. But a membership based scheme like Zipcar would be able to take account of individual circumstances a bit more, for example by setting the insurance component of the rental fee according to how many miles you've driven in the previous 12-month period.  |  IP: Logged Steve Scott Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1300 From: Minneapolis, MN Registered: Sep 2000 posted 08-20-2005 10:17 AM                     I've begun to take the light-rail to work, and walk the rest of the distance. I figured that I was spending, roughly eight dollars per day in gas & parking, versus the $3.50 it takes to commute round trip. For 87 octane, I paid between $2.40 and $2.63 a gallon in all places EXCEPT in Needles, CA where it was $3.09/gal. ...AND! Sunday evening, about 12 hours ahead of the Hurricane Katrina landfall, I filled up my pickup here in Lawton for $2.49 per gallon. This morning (just two days later), it was at $2.55 per gallon. As of noon time, the same station was selling 87 octane "regular" for $2.79 per gallon. That pretty well cinches it. I'm getting a bicycle. It's only 4.5 miles from my house to my work. I'm seriously considering cancelling my vacation. One gas company gave you a sticker that looked like a tiger tail was sticking out of your gas tank. Another had a blow-up dinosaur. Now they just take your money. Premium gas is now a little over $3.00 a gallon at most gas stations here in Honolulu. It is much higher on the neighbor islands. With the state;s new cap on fuel price law, there is a possibility gas could soar to about $3.25 a gallon. There is already a scheme like this in some British cities. The cost is worked out on an hourly rate (plus a subscription fee) so is less competative for longer hires.
