Posts: 3836 From: Albuquerque, NM Registered: Feb 2000 posted 10-15-2010 06:28 PM                        Hey Frank, I still have a pair of those "Powermyds" - which I bought probably around 1990 or so. Used them for controlling Sony and Barco rear-screen CRT projectors from out front at the show control position during big convention AV tech jobs - usually a distance of 120' or so. Sure beat having to run and tape down long runs of remote control cables. * * * * * I finally gave in and picked up a Panasonic DMP-BD85 Blu-ray player. Open-box deal at Best Buy for around $160USD. Certainly not the best price out there for this new 2D player from last year, but good enough for me to finally jump in. I'm not planning on doing 3D in the house. Ever. Haven't had much time to play with it yet, but on the several US and Japan concert BDs I already have, the results have been very satisfying! But I admit it will take some getting used to the long load times on some discs - my BD copy of Casino for instance, takes a couple of minutes to load before it will display the main menu. Of course this purchase will beget a sound system upgrade. For now we'll have to listen in Dolby Stereo decoded from the player's stereo outputs for another few weeks until I can upgrade our way-old pre-Dolby Digital receiver to something that can accept HDMI inputs. It comes in the worst packaging I have ever seen. Why can't studios just use normal Blu-ray boxes? Blade Runner is the only multi-collection that got it right. I must have gotten distracted when I was typing. The discs bend when you try to remove them and I don't want them to snap or develop micro-cracks over time. The completely unnecessary stupid ring surrounding the disk combines with the center spindle holding onto the disk too tightly to make the disk nearly impossible to get off without bending it. I haven't busted one yet but I'm sure the day is coming and if it's part of a multi-disk set that will really suck. Back on topic: I just pre-ordered the "Complete Series" box set of the Larry Sanders Show. It's the first "complete series" box I'll own, although there are a few other shows I've bought all the seasons one at a time. Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 10-26-2010 10:58 PM                     I have to chime in with agreement about being annoyed by some DVD and Blu-ray package designs where you really have to pry to remove the disc out of the case. For instance, Band of Brothers IMHO is a fantastic box set to have on Blu-ray. But damn, some of those discs are stuck in the packaging good. All of the disc holders fold out of the tin case accordion style. It's a tiny bit tricky to keep it all in order and fit it back into the case properly. A few of my old compact discs have a pretty good spindle design. Remember those 24K gold surface "Ultra discs" from Mobile Fidelity? The disc was held in the jewel case by some little plastic grip thing that would hold on tight when the case was close, but lift up and release the grip on the disc when you wanted to play the disc. No prying! I think it was a good design and ought to be used on Blu-ray discs. But I'm sure we're stuck with the crappy old alternatives because the bean counters running the company don't want to pay some fellow any extra coins for his disc holder patent.  |  IP: Logged Joe Redifer You need a beating today Posts: 12859 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: May 99 posted 10-27-2010 02:16 AM                        There are no spindles in the Back to the Future collection. They are all held by the outer ring. Who comes up with this shit and WHY? I hate non-standard packaging like this. Digibooks are a little better, but I'd still rather have normal packaging.
