Behold the Gigaset One by those inventive Germans (Siemens):
I think I once posted a wish item that would let me do what this unit does. This sweet little box (under $80) lets me interface my cell service to my entire home phone system -- standard telephone extensions parallel wired to every room now can be used to pick up and make calls via the cell service provider. Just put the cell within 30 ft of this interface and the bluetooth finds it, connects to it. Plug your telephone wiring into it and you are done. All your phones now take and make calls via the cell service, all by the magic of BlueTooth.
What made me start looking for such a device about a year and a half ago? Because anyone who uses a cell phone at home in anything but a studio apartment knows the Prime Directive of cell phones -- unless you have Crazy Glued the cell phone to your body, whenever it rings, no matter what room it is in, you will be located in the room farthest away from it. If you live in a two story house, you will be on one floor and it will be on the other.
We've got telephone extensions in every room of the place, so with this unit, whenever a call comes in to the cell phone, the device rings every extension in every room....this is AWESOME! AND, I get to talk on a REAL telephone phone that I can hold firmly in one hand and press comfortably against my ear and mouth, unlike cell phones which may be well designed for small size but not for easy handling or comfortable telephone conversation.
This thing is beautifully designed and executed -- the simplicity is quite elegant (even my very untech-savvy aunt understands how to use it). Now I am able to use a cell service provider but still get that service extended to those standard telephones with their comfortably designed handsets.
And what surprised me was that the cellphone service sounds even clearer on the standard telephone. How? Well, you've got a handset with a much bigger speaker in instead of the miniscule thing they necessarily have to use in cell phones.
It can interface to THREE cells in case you have other family members with their own cells and each will ring the extensions with distinctive rings. If you don't want to give up your land line, it will also interface with that as well and give it a distinctive ring. When you pick up any extension, you can then select which service you want to use -- land line or one of the three cells -- just by using the FLASH (or off-hook thingy) and dialing 1, 2, or 3. Very clever.
I think this product will be the answer for all those young people who are just starting out and for whom paying for two phone service providers is just too expensive. Not to mention in this economy, may people will be thinking long and hard about getting rid of one of those two services and of the two, the one more likely to get tossed will be their land-line service as the cell is the more versatile of the two. The interface certainly will give them the best of both worlds -- cell service versatility but standard land-line comfort in many rooms of their homes.
I totally love it and already don't see how I could ever have done without it.
