Describe the "background noise": hiss, pops, some sort of distortion? The print could be dirty or abraded. Reverse scan readers (whether red LED or IR LED), while usually much better for frequency response and channel separation, are more sensitive to surface abrasions because they have more specular optics.

I suspect the print suffered projector abrasion because the Dolby Digital was dropping out.

Nobody has suggested that SMPTE could command anyone to do anything. The point is that SMPE & SMPTE have led organized, objective research into originally disorganized & dangerously inconsistent technical issues from camera & projection speeds to amount of light on the screen to XM distortion of optical tracks, & issued an opinion on a Recommended Practice to achieve most reliable & best quality results.

As Frank said, where the hell was SMPTE? During this complete replacement of optical soundtracks with one of different specs, SMPTE has not involved itself in any of the problems or issues that were brought up even in the cyan track committee meetings (where they were never pursued or resolved). During this time, SMPTE has been standing outside of the room looking up & whistling.

Nobody suggests that SMPTE is enforcing anything, but RP's used to have some significance. SMPTE doesn't enforce the screen illumination RP, but its development signifies a de facto benchmark. The Cyan Track committe can develop anything it wants.

John: is there a SMPTE RP for XM distortion, & did silver tracks on red readers achieve its recommendation?

SMPTE Recommended Practice RP104 specifies XM distortion measurements. The Goldberg Paper has a graph showing that cross modulation distortion can be optimized to the same low distortion for both a red reader and a tungsten reader -- but for a conventional (cyan+magneta+silver) track, the optimization density is different for each, so you need to choose one or the other:

The background sounds were low rumbling and distortion of the dialog when an actor spoke a little louder. I thought at first the DD track had dropped out because of abrasion, but it came back and stayed instantly when the color part began.

Perhaps the BW stock is more sensitive to abrasion than 2383? This doesn't seem surprising, given how much we've heard about research to increase the scratch resistance of modern color stocks.

The rumbling sound Michael descibes is usually caused by fine scrathes on the base side of the film. When the soundtrack is closed, the scratches are blocked. As the soundtrack opens the film is clear and the scratches are exposed and read as sound.

An interesting note to add to Sam's post above, IR readers REALLY show off the slightest damage to a track. If you think that scratched track sounded bad on a red reader, try it on an IR reader!

I said "AFAIK", because I heard it second-hand. One of my fellow Kodak engineers visited one of the major sound houses in Hollywood. He noted that the cross-mod testing was mostly being done with red LED.
I stand corrected [Embarrassed] --- cyan+magenta+silver tracks are normally optimized for white light or IR readers. I double checked with our Hollywood office, and they were told the following:

Cyan-dye-only soundtracks are produced without the caustic chemicals and silver used in the usual print manufacturing process and significantly reduce water usage. Silver-replicated tracks collectively use approximately 20 million gallons of water a year – enough drinking water for a town of 75,000. Distributors further reduce waste by eliminating the need to replace prints due to redevelopment problems in silver soundtracks.

“MGM is proud to be in the forefront of this landmark change in film soundtracks, and to be taking a significant step in improving the environment,” said Chris Aronson, MGM executive vice president and general sales manager.

Conversion to cyan requires the installation of red light-emitting diode (LED) readers in projectors, as a pure cyan soundtrack played on a white light or infrared reader will cause distortion, sound reduction or possible inaudibility. It is estimated that the vast majority of the projectors in the United States are now equipped with the red LED readers, according to an MGM press release.

The studio’s release of these prints marks a significant breakthrough in making the conversion to pure cyan a reality for NATO, which has worked closely with the Dye Track Committee, a group of motion picture executives formed in 1998, in the fight to replace silver tracks with pure cyan dye tracks.

LEDs also last about five times longer than tungsten lights, and slowly fade over time, giving operators warning that replacement is due.

“We are grateful for MGM’s leadership, and delighted that the studios are taking advantage of the theatres’ shift to red-light readers,” said NATO president John Fithian. “This demonstrates that the film industry as a whole has an environmental conscience.”

Digital soundtracks do not require silver replication and are thus not affected by the new process.

Does the RP specify a range of XM cancellation, in the manner of the RP for screen illumination of 12 - 22 fl?

You had mentioned earlier that new prints with silver tracks (for example, b/w rep, reissue or new titles) would at some point be expected to be optimized for red readers instead of white light. Since the "one track" part of the above is erroneous, at what point should there be an expectation of silver tracks optimized for red readers?

Yes, there will be silver tracks on B&W prints, and cyan dye tracks on color prints, and obviously, the vast majority of new prints today are color. I would expect when there is "one reader" (i.e., red LED), all new tracks will be optimized for red readers.

The current MIX of readers is what makes it "a painful experience in terms of educating the post and distribution community."

Although SMPTE RP104 does not specify the allowed distortion or tolerance, I would assume the goal is to obtain minimum distortion. QC does include listening tests on both white light and red light readers.

Could it also be that the analog track on Kill Bill 2 reel 1 was simply not optimized for red?

If the cross-modulation distortion were not optimized, the most noticeable issue would be sibilance:

There was definitely a lot of sibilance, so I guess this was a black and white print not optimized for red. Which I find a bit strange, given the enormous attention the topic has received lately.

It's not strange, conidering that the issues of XM distortion across soundtracks specialized for each reader & questions involving soundtracks if b&w were utilized as an esthetic choice were SPECIFICALLY brought up in discussion at the cyan track meetings. As the result of having to just arbitrarily draw a line of

the result would have to be exactly as it is. The fact that the incmopatibility problems between the soundtrack types arose not just across prints but in this case in one print is not strange, just funny.
