I just played HD DVD Bourne Identity last night and it looked great. I had some neighbors over who know I have 35mm capability. They thought they were watching Bourne Identity in 35mm until it was time for a reel changeover. It was that good.

I went to see the newest National Treasure movie in a year old theater. Was that presentation bad. It seems that the pressure plate was not all the way down. The bottom of the frame was fuzzy and the left side was not cropped correctly. I believe this is what you might get if the pressure plate was not fully home. I complained to the management and they said the tech people were not available in the evenings. The only people in place just had the ability to turn the movie on and turn it off. They asked what was my choice. I said leave it on.

Lol yeah... it's amazing someone who has so much "knowledge" of something has yet to invest in either format (I think?).

Couldn't Bobby be interested in what's going on without being worried about it? Maybe it's just me.

You're right... Somehow I can envision him using up the old NTSC sets he has laying around via the upcoming government subsidized black box decoders well into the next millennium [Wink] . On the other hand I have a friend that owns an HD-DVD player who doesn't even have a HI-Def Tv because he's waiting for the best deal in Marshall Fields bargan basement... or similar deal at K-Mart or Costco... Really, guys like this actually end up spending more $$ on all this stuff if you factor in the gas they use up driving around looking every place.

I don't think someone thats isn't at all concerned about it would spend all that time typing about it.... just seems kinda odd otherwise... Even I finally gave in to my wife's pressure for a Blew Ray so she could get Disney stuff on Hi-Def.

Buy them... Enjoy them.... eat a great steak and watch your favorite Hi-Def movie in comfort..... before both formats become obsolete!

All of the first DVD-V discs were single layer, and if they had two data layers they were "flipper" discs.
I don't think that claim is entirely true. There were dual-layer discs available at the product launch; they just were not Reverse Spiral Dual Layer (which is what most people think of when they mention dual-layer DVDs).

Some of the early discs that featured both a widescreen and a pan-and-scan version were encoded in a fashion where the widescreen version was on one layer and the pan-and-scan was on the second layer, with both being on the same side of the disc. It was the movies with a lengthy running time that were issued as "flippers" ("The Right Stuff," "Das Boot").

I think the first release of Terminator 2 on DVD was the first dual layer DVD-V disc (not the Ultimate Edition DVD or Extreme DVD version). I also think that was early 1999, a good 18 months after DVD was introduced.
The first "T2" DVD was released in October 1997.

Das Boot looked HORRIBLE on DVD. What was the bitrate on that thing? Looked like Youtube.

Yeah, that's right, Mark. Keep grasping at straws, such as slinging cheap, personal insults.

Your precious HD-DVD format is on the ropes. There's no rosy predictions of HD-DVD success you can rub in the faces of anyone interested in "Blew Ray."

Care to get your comments back on topic instead of focusing them on me?

Just like with DVD, I didn't buy into it immediately and chose to wait a couple of years until the format was more mature. I don't feel like wasting a bunch of money on an early adopter quality player with significant problems.

HD-DVD is going to be HD-DEAD. No sense in investing into that format now. The main reason why I was waiting was for more dual format players to reach the marketplace. But now that doesn't look like its going to happen either. Blu-Ray players are only just now getting to "Profile 1.1" status and none or "Profile 2.0" yet. With those issues noted, I think I have made a good decision by waiting for a lot of this crap to clear up. On top of that, the existing DVD-V format isn't too awful bad either.

I agree with you, so does most of the buying public! Being first with new technology these days is just too darn hard. All those people who rushed out and spent thousands of dollars on early digital cameras with only 1 megapixal of resolution would be a good example of why not.

It does look like you saved yourself a few 100 bucks in a hobby that cost's thousands. Hey a few 100 bucks is a few 100 bucks and it always can be used for going to the movies on a Saturday night.

You seem to be the smartest person on the WEB for saving those few 100 bucks NOT.

Yes Larry, you too seem to have made some savings of a few thousand dollars, by rushing in and buying an early HD projector with only 1,000,000 pixals resolution instead of Blue rays 2,000,000 pixal output!
Perhaps by doing some homework and being patient you could have had the full montee and the new sports car!

Being first with new technology these days is just too darn hard.

To dive in to any technology is always an issue. One of the possible alternatives would be to invite the neighbors over to watch shadow grams of rabbits that I can do with my hands. All I need is a $2 lamp now that I waited the full 120 years from the first technology introduction to replaced candles. The electric light bulb.

From today's IMDB news: (www.imdb.com)

quote:
Warren Lieberfarb, the ousted head of WBHE and now a consultant to Toshiba, which holds the patents on HD DVD technology, predicted that hard drives and reusable flash drives will eventually replace disks of all types. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lieberfarb called such storage media "much more economical and green" and predicted that in five or ten years, movies will be distributed online.
Of course, convenience and economy may not win out, but GREEN will!

Well flash drives will replace the others eventually, though it has little to do with what he's talking about. Once they get rid of the "maximum writes" that flash drives have, they'll take over all simply because their simpler; no moving parts.
