The Carmike theater in my town had two prints of Titanic. Both screens were selling out all their weekend shows for months on end, from opening day in December right up until the prints finally left the theater in mid April. Most of the weekday shows were selling out as well during the first few weeks. I just think that's worth pointing out considering the very short shelf life of movies these days. Anyway, both prints were in great shape when they left. I know 'cuz I found humor in watching "propeller man" repeatedly hit that giant screw and do a 6 1/2 gainer before hitting the water.

I think bad managers and projectionists who harm prints can be found in almost any movie theater chain. It's pretty nice when you can find a theater where the manager and/or various crew members actually give a hoot about presentation quality.

Our DLP's are installed. Tomorrow is my first day making a play list start to finish. Of course, this is the week that we get in 4 movies... Wish me luck, cause I'll need it [Frown] I did one tonight, and it was that bad. Our LSM (or whatever the initials are) is up and running as of 2 hours ago. However, I have no freaking clue how to use the thing haha. Oh god, this will be interesting... I want my damn Century's back!!!

..which brings up an interesting question on all of this "booth overhauling" and that is: with this complete conversion to have all of their theatres go digital, was this a plan to fully eliminate booth personnel, or did their jobs remain only to be retrained as digital operators?

It's probably going to be a bit of both, with share holders rooting for more in the way of job elimination -'cuz having to pay for things like employees sucks ass!

None of these theatres are worthy of having new technology installed. Even the lexington theatre. However, it is a discount theatre that will probably never go first run since it is surrounded by 33 first run screens in a 2 to 3 mile radious. It has also been shut down by the health department for a whole weekend a few months ago. The other locations could easily be closed down or sold off. They are all located in small towns and some are in bad shape.

Closure may indeed happen to those theaters you mentioned. Carmike has been closing a good number of old and small locations.

Even with that stated, I'm still surprised to see those expensive Christie systems going into some theaters that are clearly aging.

The big question for a number of these markets is whether Carmike will replace a closed theater with a new build. In the case of some of those towns in Kentucky they may just get out of the market.

Same here. The Carmike 7 in Billings is at least 25 years old, sloped floors and really seedy. Even the "new" Wynnsong will be 10 years old this month. (It opened just in time for Star Wars Episode I.) I'm sort of surprised that Wallace has moved into Carmike territory in Bozeman, and Cinemark has done the same in Helena...both much smaller towns than Billings. But so far, Carmike owns Billings.

If you HAVE to have a competitor then Carmike is the best one of all to have in the same town.... they are no competition at all.

So... the East side of Billings is wide open and far enough from the other theaters and waiting for a nice theater. There is even a closed Smith's food store just a waitin for this to happen to its location. A theater over on that side would also bring in some good traffic and bolster the other business over there.

The Second run Carmike in the middle of town is going bye-bye and supposedly the Amusement Park Drive Inn owner is going to turn it into a beer and draft house. I don't think it'll fly though...

Brand bashing would be a fool-hardy business strategy in determining a new theater location. Not all Carmike locations are the same, despite repeated attempts to claim just that.

Carmike certainly has some locations I would not visit even with digital projection installed. The Sikes 10 theater in Wichita Falls' Sikes Senter Mall is one example that immediately comes to mind due to several of its houses featuring tiny screens with fixed 1.85:1 aspect ratios. I haven't been there since they converted the theater over to digital projection. Hopefully Christie's techs figured out how to letterbox a 'scope image on those screens rather than have things setup like they were in the past, with the right or left 1/4 of the film frame dropping off the side of the screen. Carmike really needs to build an entirely new theater in Wichita Falls to replace both the Sikes 10 and Century City 6. And they need to build it away from the freaking mall! Normally you can't have real stadium seating when trying to fit a theater under a mall's limited ceiling heights.

Contrary to popular belief, Carmike actually does have some good locations that do pose quite a competitive threat. Add to that the fact 80% of the theater chain's screens are now equipped for digital projection. That's something no other theater circuit can claim.

Emagine is 100% digital. UltraStar is close to 100% if not already there. Galaxy and Rave are both approaching 100%.

Granted, those chains have fewer total theatres than a large company such as Carmike -- and my comment is not meant to take anything away from Carmike as I commend them for aggressively pursuing digital presentations -- but I just wish to point out that there are other companies that can claim to be 100% digitally-equipped or can claim that one or more screens in each of their theatres can handle digital presentations.

OK, you got me there. However, the difference in screen count is pretty huge. 80% of 2400 screens being equipped for digital projection is an impressive statistic that even the Carmike-haters out there cannot reject.

Carmike definitely has the most digital projection equipped screens by a wide margin. Out of the other major exhibitors (such as Regal, AMC, Cinemark, etc.) none of them are anywhere near Carmike's level on the number of installs or aggressive pace on installation.

At Cinema 6 in State College, they did letterbox on two of the screens that were fixed 1.85. These screens are in the two smallest auditorium. At the 5-screen theater were I work, we had one screen letterboxed on either side for flat format films. All of our screens are constant width. However, that one particular screen's masking didn't open tall enough. There is a track in place for side adjustable masking, just no masking installed.
