Do movie keys ever go bad? An example:
Last night I had to check the keys for Surfs Up, which is splitting with Fantastic 4. I knew that the keys expired today, but I swear on my life that a new one had been ingested (either by another employee or AccessIT) and was good for the next few weeks.
So I get a phone call today from my manager because the first showing of it went black because the key was no good. Now, I didn't get a yes or no from him, if he went up to check to see what the date of the keys said in the Doremi. Either way, he had to give refunds, and had to get a new key from AccessIT
So, did I just have a blonde moment and looked at the Fantastic Four key, or do some correctly ingested and transfered keys just go 'bad', even when they are suppose to be good to go?

Paul, the AccessIT software that is running on Allison's Doremi isn't set up like that. The only way to check for keys is under the 'KDM by station' tab in the Content Manager.
Allison, no offense but I think you had a blonde moment. Surf's up being Sony it would be Deluxe handling the keys. What might have screwed you up is that the Deluxe keys are always good from the opening date. That is, the first Technicolor key for 'Pirates' would have been valid May 23 through say June 14th (can't remember exactly). The next key would then be valid June 14 through June 21st, etc. With deluxe the second key would have been good May 23 to June 21 (one week after the original key expired).
I've never heard of a multi-week holdover key, except in the case of a holiday (I know, July 4th was Wednesday, but none of our holdover keys were multi-week). I'm not playing Surf's Up so I can't tell you for sure.
Honestly, they should be checking keys Wednesday night. All keys should be delivered by then-with the exception of AccessIT keys which seem to come in between close on Wednesday and opening on Thursday sometimes.

It's not unheard of.... but unlikely.
Your manager should have looked at the media status and checked the key dates when the problem arose. Sometimes it's hard to avoid the knee-jerk reaction of just rebooting, or calling someone else before looking into the problem. A number of issues could have caused the problem. Among these could be a failure verify the key transferred, or that due to some technical error, the key was bad.
Perhaps the transfer didn't fully complete, or the key was corrupted during the transfer. Either way, it would have remained on the LMS and indicated whether or not the key was even delivered and ingested.

Who are you referring to when you say "They"
I always stress to the staff that it is ultimately their responsibility to make sure the key is valid and correct. If film were being used, one would not assume that the print on the platter was the scheduled film without checking first. Perhaps a print move or breakdown wasn't performed the night before. If the wrong film was started because of this, it isn't the projectionist from the night before that is to blame. The responsibility would lie on the person running the films in the morning, as he or she should be checking to make sure that he/she is threading the correct print.
Obviously, if the key was never delivered, there's not much the projectionist can do about it. It's interesting that Deluxe date's their keys in such a way, but on a movie like Surf's up where it has been out for a while, most operators would be looking that the expiration date.

Time for an update on the Christie/AIX digital projection installation project at Carmike locations. After a break during Summer, Christie and AccessIT crews have resumed a rapid pace of digital projection installations.
Over the past several days crews passed the 2000 screen mark for d-cinema installations in the Carmike chain while working in states like Michigan, North Carolina, Missouri and North Dakota. A number of installations are currently in progress and several more sites will be completed before the end of September.
Crews are getting into ever older, smaller locations with greater installation challenges. Some new DLP-equipped locations have the notice, "technical difficulties with this auditorium, please call for times," in their showtimes listing on the Carmike website.
I noticed what appears to be a recent database bug in the Carmike website regarding number of digital screens listed. Near the top of each theater location web page its number of digital screens are listed. Theaters without any digital screens are supposed to list "0 digital screens available." Instead every location has all screens listed as being equipped for that number figure. When scrolling farther down for movies and showtimes it becomes clear something isn't right when no d-cinema icons are present. Carmike will have to fix that error at least for the nearly 100 screens that won't have digital projection installed.
I'm wondering if any first run screens will be left out of the digital projection install program. It also seems somewhat likely that at least a couple or so 2nd run locations in cities like Raleigh and Birmingham may get digital projection -at least it does from the math breakdown between the number of Carmike's 1st run and 2nd run screens.
Here's the rundown:
2028 Christie/AccessIT systems installed as of 9/21/07
Total of 2388 screens in theater chain
84.9% of screens in entire theater chain DLP equipped. 90.1% of first run screens DLP equipped. 138 second run screens, none DLP equipped to date.
