Electronic masking?

Are you saying the projector modifies the D-cinema image into some sort of trapezoid before it is projected? If so, that image manipulation can destroy image detail.

Cinemark's Christie DLP system here is almost certainly using digital keystone correction. The scope image for "Monster House 3D" was a perfect rectangle, despite the projector's very high position relative to the center of the screen, esp. in scope with the top masking lowered.

Electronic masking my ass. It is the electronic equivalent of an aperture plate...the "masking" merely turns off those pixels so any information beyond that point is lost.

Nothing is compensated for any more than it is in film. If you are 20% off center the image will be keystoned however the "aperture plate" will look damn near perfect. Note, the masking feature works with curved screens too so you can pincushions as well as footballs.

When a DCinema machine is set up, a good installer will shift the lens to minimize keystone as much as possible without causing reduction in image clarity or light uniformity.

Personally, I'd like some digital keystone correction. This is not like running a static image of your computer on the screen...the artifacts of digital keystone when used on a moving image are much, MUCH less noticable. Also, if one is using an anamorphic lens for Scope pictures (only a 1.25X anamorphic for 2K machines), then you are morphing the pixels anyway. I, however, have some installations where the digital projector is significantly off center and there is not enough lens shift to overcome it. As such, subtitles can really show off the keystone.

Steve, are you saying it's optical correction (lens shift) and not digital keystone correction? I'm not sure I understand (add "dense" to my failings). The one and only DLP show I saw had the screen masked for scope (top masking). The pillarboxed 1.85 trailers had perfectly vertical black bars on the sides, no visible keystoning at all. This despite the projector's very high position relative to the screen. That exact same screen had very noticeable keystoning with 35mm film projected on it.

Carmike's dual systems utilize a rail setup to move the projectors in and out of position.

Yes, any keystone correction in a digital system is of the optical type...lens shift. The projectors do not have digital correction.

Most of my systems are three projectors (two film, one digital). They are also mixed shows of digital and film so using a track for the projectors isn't an option, normally. I do have the occassional video projector on a lift tht drops into place and rises out of the way. None of those are the big DCinema grade projectors though.

It doesn't exist because it would minimize the number of usable pixels and lower the available resolution. Just as it does on projectors that are equipped with it. The Barco projector has ALOT of available shift to minimize keystons. One installation I'd heard of the tech was able to completely null it out with just some of the available shift.

Steve... do your D-Cinema systems use anamorphics or a zoom lens? Hopefully anamorphics!

Digital keystone has no affect on the number of usable pixels...once one has run out of lens shift, they have to wack off the pixels with "masking" to not show the overscan on the actual masking.

The use of anamorphics depends on the theatre. In general, yes, I use anamorphics for the "Scope" ratio. If the theatre only has vertical masking, then no...scope is the "smaller" picture. I do not "zoom" the lens since more often than not, the lens' range will not allow to go between both focal lengths.

Also, it is not automatic to "zoom" the lens though I think NEC can do a repeatable zoom.

It is not necessarily better to use an anamorphic and not necessarily worse. Yes, you are using more pixels with an anamorphic but you are scaling the image to do that and then you are using an anamorphic lens that degrades the image. Don't believe me...put up a focus pattern that is internally generated so you are down on a single pixel...look at that pattern with and without anamorphic...there is definately a smear on the anamorphic version.

Like so many things in life, it is a matter of what works best for a particular installation.

I agree there is a slight smear from the anamorphic lens... saw that at Dolby.... I still think that less optics(prime & anamorphic) is better than more optics(zoom). While these zooms are quite expensive they too will degrade the image somewhat because of all the glass they contain... no zoom is nearly as good as a prime lens. This is true of even the highest quality zooms. We can only hope that anamorphs for D.C. get better. Utilizing more verticle pixels allows for better reproduction of titles(or end credits) and rain.... both are very difficult if not the most difficult for D.C. to handle let alone with less verticle pixels when scope is done with a zoom.

The Carmike Cinemas website has been updated in the last day or two and shows more locations added to their list of digital cinema equipped theaters.

The update also has a partial list of theaters scheduled to have digital projectors installed soon. Two theaters here in Oklahoma are shown on that list, the Cinema Center 8 in Shawnee and the Carmike 8 here in Lawton. The theater in Shawnee is currently in the process of getting all 8 theaters equipped and already has some digital systems up and running. The Lawton theater will start getting its 8 projectors plugged in around the end of next week.

Lots of work has happened in advance at these theaters to make the process go more efficiently. By the time the projectors arrive all the data cable, new electrical conduits and boxes, new exhaust ports, cabinets, etc. should already be installed.

From what I hear if everything goes according to plan an 8 plex should be converted in two days time, 1 day each for 4 screens.

Wow! Our Carmike 10 here in Huntsville has these now, in all auditoriums, according to Carmike's web site. I need to see a movie there and check it out! I have not yet seen a digital presentation, although we have two theatres with digital projectors now. This digital projection is taking over way faster than I ever thought it would.
