Working at Best Buy in video, I learned that a lot of suburban media-seekers, where it seems the mainstay of DLP projectors have penetrated into the Minneapolis/St. Paul market, are mostly led into believing a new technology is superior through the idealism of marketing.
DLP reps would visit Best Buy stores weekly & come equipped with plenty of spec & terms which basically equate to jargon that the average person will only pretend to grasp. Albeit, Best Buy stores have video networks that make 2K cinema seem like 70mm, so it's much less of an accurate side-by-side comparison (expecially when the DLP reps bring their own independent display.
It's the wow of technology for these people, and it arrives first in places where it's needed: the places that can't do film well, or can't do theater management with any vision connected to the customer's experience, rather than their wallet.
But the last days of the old technology will be superior to the first days of the "new" technology. And as long as communities like FT exist to bond the cinema people who care, we can be sure that any technology won't be exploited & forgotten, besides the point that these are obviously NOT the last days for film.
