2 in Salt Lake City at the big carmike in West Valley with more to come.... Aside from the Carmike stuff and a few others it seems like Christie is going at this VERY slowly. Lets face it alot of press has been made about 4K stuff and how much better it is. Perhaps Christie themselves have gone into a slow mode to wait for T.I. to catch up to the 4K realm.... We have two 100+ screen customers that would like to convert but getting Christie to call them back is nothing short of a joke. Christie just doesn't seem interested.

I have to wonder that perhaps due to the current rapid pace of installs with Carmike if Christie is not a bit stretched thin at the moment? Just speculation.

Dustin...your speculation is probably correct. Don't pay any attention to the folks making outrageous remarks regarding the quality and pace at which Digital Cinema is proceeding. There's a lot of people out there making annoying, misleading and often false comments who want to see Digital Cinema fail.

One of the main things slowing down installations is electrical difficulties in some older theaters. You remove a 35mm setup with a 2000 watt lamp for a small-ish auditorium and replace it with a video unit carrying a 4000 watt lamp. Along with beefing up electrical wiring other things may have to be done to get things brought up to current NEC standards.

Basically the crews are not getting in and out of some theaters as fast as they wanted.

I don't know the plan Carmike has on which theaters are scheduled to receive CP2000 projectors. There's obviously more factors at work than just equipping the newest, best theaters ahead of all the other locations.

At this point it seems like Carmike has at least a few hundred systems installed. The pace is sure to speed up as they become more familiar with the various kinks they have to contend with.

Things are coming together in that department Bobby. I think there were some problems with timing in early installs, but right now things are being coordinated better. Our install will begin next Monday and our electrical service/lamphouse venting/etc has all be upgraded. Everything is just waiting for the projectors/installers.

Humm, This seems to be directed at me and this is definately not the case. I am very PRO D-Cinema and we have many customers that can benefit greatly from it... even at the reduced resolution it offers. But it is indeed happenning at a snails pace... There are a boat load of screens out there to do! Now if they were equipping 100 screens a week that would be different. A few a week for Carmike and the present Rave sites are a drop in the bucket. Of course I would prefer it to be 4K since that is what present film is capable of. Why should we settle for an inferior format?

Don't forget, though, there's a lot of people out there making annoying, misleading and often false comments about film, too.

I don't think anyone here actively dislikes digital, I just think most people want the system that replaces film to be at least as good, in terms of picture quality.

Yah... and it starts with the constant drumming about how film is hardly worth watching after a couple of days, due to the scratching and dye fading that occurs in the course of normal use!

I see and hear that from the "Digital" people more than not. They have been touting D-Cinema to be better than film which the present 2k system simply is not. I see the present 2K mainframe of D-Cinema as a very expensive white elephant that will become obsolte just as all other electronic systems do and in very short order since the technology is now getting pretty old. Upgrading a 2K mainframe to do 4K is not going to be an economically viable upgrade that can be done. The optical block is simply too expensive and its still the majority of the cost of a new projector.

Exactly!

Again, we have alot of customers that can benefit from this type of projection in more ways than one.

So far, the Carmike houses in MSP have only had Warner Bros. content. Notably Superman Returns. Questionably The Lake House. I'd like to see the hardcore Lake House fans going for that "ammenity".

Carmike's website lists three theaters in Minnesota with digital projection. They list the following features (a number of which are not Warner Bros.) as being shown with digital projection:

As far as I know, yes. I can confirm that at least 'Cars' was also played digitally at Oakdale.

"Cars" D-Cinema engagements in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area were confirmed a month ago in this thread and in this thread.

Guys...am I the only one here who thinks these D-Cinema discussions are getting out of hand? It's disappointing and frustrating to see these new D-Cinema discussions pop up where someone "discovers" information that's already been reported and exists in another thread. Now, I'm not trying to be unreasonable; I realize not everyone reads every single discussion or necessarily remembers all the details. But, come on, I'm a regular here and have been reporting this stuff and assembling these playdate listings for quite a while -- and I suspect most of you know that -- and those of you now posting info are regulars, too.

So...seeing that some of you are too lazy [?!] to click links that redirect you to another website or are not interested in visiting the print specs & trailer details forum (where the links often appear), would it be more effective if instead of posting a link to these playdate listings if I pasted in the whole list right here?

After a month of thread inactivity, I feel justified in bumping the thread mainly as how it pertains to the hardware installs at Carmike locations -the subject of this thread. After a slow start accelerated progress is happening. That's worthwhile news.

I'll also say a lot of folks take at least some enjoyment bashing Carmike whenever the opportunity presents itself. So if some positive news does happen with that company I'm going to be one of the very few people that bothers to mention it.

Gee, Michael, are you saying you're the only one who should be allowed to ever post listings of where a digital print may be playing? As far as I can tell, Bobby and others have done their own research and have not been copying from your list. So what is the problem exactly?
