Whoa! Carmike 12 in Corvallis has, what, at least 5 DLP screens now (maybe more). Looks like I be taking a drive up there on July 4th to check it out. It's not that far away, much closer than Portland.

I guess I've been wasting my time keeping up on this DLP stuff by creating these playdate listings and taking time to keep fellow film-techers in the loop by posting links. [Smile]

Could the rate of DC installs be governed by the fact (?) that film companies are paying for them?

If the major chains had to spend $40,000 on a new 35mm projector or be given a digital unit gratis, which would they chose?

Bobby’s comments about maintenance are spot on. Although, it is easier for a single screen where the owner watches films and wants them to look and sound as good as possible.

Well, I'll have to apologize for not taking time to scan through all of Carmike's locations in 21 different cities in Georgia to find those two D-Cinema locations.

The Cartersville location appears to be one of those theaters were 75% or more screens are digital-based. Of course, movies like Superman Returns and The Devil Wears Prada are playing on multiple screens and could be a mix of film prints and video.

Some might wonder why many of these locations are getting aroung half their screens converted over to D-Cinema when the hype was really about Carmike getting D-Cinema into all auditoriums. Right now there isn't enough content. Not all movies being released have digital versions. Many theaters don't have the space for both film projectors and these new DLP units. If one location had all its film projectors removed and replaced with video systems then that location would have instances were some screens would have no content to play.

Yeah, it's either that or that I just didn't care to be quite as thorough.

But to be a bit more thorough, I went back and looked closer at Carmike's Utah locations. All three locations in Utah (Provo, West Jordan and West Valley City) appear to have 50% of theaters converted to D-Cinema. That's more than the "couple" I noted earlier. Movies like Superman Returns are just taking up a bunch of those digital screens.

As a note, of all the wide releases in June only one-A Prairie Home Companion-was not available digitally.

Wasn't A Prairie Home Companion shot on HD video? I seem to recall something about that while flipping past the HBO First Look thing that was on cable a couple weeks ago. If the movie was indeed shot on video then it would certainly seem beyond strange that a digital version of it was not made available.

Yes it was. Just a guess, but maybe because of the "artsy" nature of the release (Picturehouse) perhaps they aren't set up for digital distribution yet, or they felt they couldn't get any screens to show it digitally? It really wasn't a very wide release.

Sources suggest that Paramount's "Nacho Libre" -- a June wide release -- was not released digitally. So that would make two wide releases from June that didn't go out digitally...unless 3,000 engagements doesn't count as a wide release!

I plead "information overload". Keeping track of where Carmike is installing DLP has not been high on my priority list, since there are no Carmikes here in Eugene/Springfield. [Razz]

Michael's list pegged most of Carmike's DLP-equipped locations, including the one in Oregon. There's a few that aren't playing Superman Returns, such as the Carmike 14 in Fort Smith, AR. It has 7 Christie DLP systems. The competing Malco 12-plex in Fort Smith is playing the movie. Carmike's location is probably too close to the Malco site to have a booking of the same movie.

The Carmike in Corvallis is fairly new, so it should have been designed and outfitted with D-Cinema in mind. It'll be interesting to see how it measures up.

I thought I would chime in by saying that my location is due to get a full 10 Screen digital install sometime next month. I have no real specifics just yet other than being told "sometime" in August. I have yet to see a digital presentation so it will be interesting to to see just how well everything is going to work. I will try to keep you guys (and gals) updated on any further progress.
