Richard's post brings up an interesting point. What's with these theatres that always seem to be "out of stock" of certain items? I hate it when they're "out" of hot dogs, nachos, etc. There's no excuse for running out of these items. Just a pet peeve of mine ... if you advertise the product ... make sure you're selling it.

I had a man and woman walk in with cups of coffee. My cashier said, "Sir, you can't take those in."

"Watch me," he says.

So they get a manager. The manager says, "I'm sorry, you can't take that in."

"Yes I can, and you can't stop me. What are you gonna do...call the police? Is it a crime for me to bring coffee into your theater? We're taking our coffee in."

And he did. The manager decided not to pursue it because the man got his bluff in.

How would you guys handle that?

I'd get them to sign my hot beverage liability waiver.

Why did the cashier even sell them tickets? With that kind of crap, I would have turned them away at the door.

Brent,

I would have told him to leave, if he did not i would have called the cops. If no ones ever does anything they just kept on doing it.

Im not saying kick all the people out that try and bring stuff in, its the ones that think they can do waht ever they want. And have the attiudes.

While I don't think it's worth it for a theater to be hyper vigilant on non concession food items snuck in, I do think one should crack down on burgers and pizzas or any hot sandwiches of entrees that give off a smell. It is really annoying to sit next to some person opening up some fish sandwich and chomping on it.

It's been said before: buying a ticket allows you the privilege (not the right) of being on premises, under a set of guidelines. Guidelines are set by policy, set by theatre management, who has the right to refuse service. Customers are on someone else's property, not their own.

It's not a crime to order fast food without wearing shoes, but you can darn well expect that anyone who tries will be refused and booted (so to speak).

Actually, in many places there are such things as public health laws, but I guess that's not really your point.

In my opinion, Richard's method of handling the "Chicken, Checkers & Cookies" was carried out appropriately. Policy stated, policy enforced.

The guy with the coffee, [fu] ... he would'nt have even been allowed to purchase a ticket at my theatre. MY theatre, I make the rules... if you wanna make up the rules... YOU write the payroll checks on Friday from your own account!!!

My point exactly. But when I brought up the fact of people with bad attitudes and no tickets who are crap, (in the outside food thread) people jumped on me... Said that they could be POTENTIAL customers and TELL THEIR FRIENDS... Go figure. [Roll Eyes] It's different right after you've dealt with it.

For the most part our patrons don't abuse it. They smuggle canned soda (and beer sometimes) but they keep it discreet. We don't sell coffee so bringing in a cup isn't a felony.

However, if you have policies they should be enforced, even if you have to call the law.

If the guy didn't have coffee but fired up a cigarette in the auditorium (Sir, you can't do that. Oh yeah? Watch me!) you would enforce that. You have to be consistent.

If the guy is an arrogant SOB I'm sure his friends know it and would secretly applaud you for refusing to let him in.

"We reserve the right to refuse service..." etc.

As we have the mall food court about 70 yards from our theater, we let people bring in outside food/drink. Only exception is no alcohol, and no glass containers. If somebody were caught with one of these, a manager would tell them to throw it away or leave. If they refused, we would ask one of our security guys to do the same. Then mall security, then (if the movie isn't over by then) the police (the only ones who can physically remove somebody).

I was working with a manager, and one night he oversold seats for 'Thank God It's Friday.' A customer came up to him and said, "Where are the seats!?" Well, this manager did have a very quick wit, and he responded, "Sir, the're bolted to the floor; you'll have no trouble finding them." But it got the customer pissed off, and he took a swing at the manager.... it took a while to calm things down.

I might be talking from a retail point of view. If someone says they are not coming back to you theater because you don't offer a specific product... why not do everything in your power to offer the said product. Especially if your competition is offering it, why not find a way to offer it with more value to your customer?

I am most likely going out on a limb with that statement, but we are in the business of sales.

At face value someone asking about a product you don’t stock may seem like a "stupid customer" but to you that should say "someone is willing to pay money for this item/service, why not take this opportunity and profit from it"

Instead of losing 1 customer and the sales of their friends and family through word of mouth... Why not diversify a product that has already had a need for it expressed?

That’s just my opinion though.
