Tonight we had a customer who had an outside drink from Long John Silvers,

I found this in the prieviews and politely informed her of our no food and drink policy.
She then informed me that she needed it because she had diabetes. I then told her" Maam, we have a large selection of drinks at the concession stand with sugar in them."

I was then told to "JUST TAKE IT!" I took the cup, threw it away, and was followed by the customers daughter who chewed me out for following Carmike policy. She said that they had come to the theatre fpr years and never had a problem before. I then said we have 4 signs posted before you enter the auditorium. That's the policy and I follow it.

Needless to say I never heard from them again.

Richard -

That is just piss poor customer service. If they are already in the auditorium, forget about it ... maybe ask politely if you catch them at the door.

Mike,

My manager tells me to make rounds of the auditoria every so often and if I find anything, outside food or drink, rowdy customers, cell phone usage, etc. To handle it as politely as possible. I have removed a burger king meal from a customer right in the middle of LOTR. I am just doing what I am told.

Mike,

I see what you're saying, but I can't necessarily agree. Just because you might not see them coming thru the door with something that, quite possibly, could have been concealed, does not mean that you shoudl not take corrective action when you find that policies are being broken.

Allowing someone to get away with a violation "just because they made it to the auditorium" is, in my opinion 'piss poor customer service" to all the customers who SUPPORTED YOUR CONCESSION STAND. I think Richard did the right thing in pointing out to the customer her wrongdoing.

Haha! I worked at a place that had the same prices for everyone. People would moan that we don't give a child/senior/military/student/humanoid discount. I just explain to them that, "It's not that we DON'T give a discount, we just charge everyone the child price." -- "What?" -- "Yeah. Our child price is $4. So we don't charge anyone any MORE than that." They seem satisfied with the answer. [Big Grin]

What did she have in that cup. Saying she needed it for her Diabeties is a lame excuse. For one. Diabetics do not need the sugar from soda pops. Two, those who are on insulin that can cause one to go into a hypoglycemic condition will normally carry Glucose pills or candy bars with them for that quick sugar adjustment that they may need.

No food, drinks or cell phones allowed in our cinema. It solves the problem of the inside/outside food/drink. [Smile]

Darryl:

========

Are you a doctor? Diabetics most certainly CAN drink sugar from soda pop. Sugar is sugar. If a diabetic feels light headed and they think their blood sugar is low, a Coke can be a life saver. Was this customer telling you the truth? I have no idea. But I would have for sure let her keep the drink. What if she WAS telling you the truth? Why take the chance? Was she violating your theatre's policy? Yes. But really, this is minor. You should have just asked her not to do it again and let her keep it.

I think the point was she could have complied with the theatre policy and purchased the needed beverage inside. Now then, if she had a prescription that said only Long John Silvers drinks will do then by all means let her pass. But otherwise it's just an excuse. There are always people who think the rules are for everyone but themselves.

No I am not a doctor I am diabetic. If you drink soda pops on a regular basis it will screw up your blood sugar. The key is to keep it under control. To much suguar will screw it up. You can use glucose tablets to do the same thing to boost your sugar if low same as a candy bar. Those on oral meds don't have as big of risk of low blood sugar as those on insulin.

One 12 oz can of soda pop is about equivilant to 9 teaspoons full of sugar. My sentence in question should have stated excess sugar from soda pops. I am not saying they can't drink it. You just can't have it like a non diabetic would drink it.

As a diabetic, you must be aware that sometimes... even if you are careful... stuff happens. Extra stress, exercise, illness, whatever. Stuff happens. And if the only sugar available is a Coke, then you drink a Coke.

And if a customer tells me that she's a diabetic and she needed this drink in her hand to help her at that moment... I would leave her alone.

Maybe she is lying. Could be. Maybe she's telling the truth. But good heavens, why take the chance?? It's simply not that important a thing to take a stand on. Just politely tell her that you hope she feels better and move on.

Does she get away with something? Maybe. So what? On the other hand, maybe she was telling you the truth and you got to be kind to her.

I wouldn't ask people to get rid of outside food/drink during a movie if it was going to distract other patrons. What would you rather have, a patron in there with a burger king coke, or 20 angry patrons wanting refunds after someone made a big deal about a coke which ruined the movie for everyone around?

Latest stupid customer story: a man goes into a video store to rent a copy of "Seabiscuit." Unfortunately, he doesn't remember the title correctly and, instead, asks for "Seaweed." The clerk was very confused and responded with "we don't have that."

(This is apparently true, according to my father, who witnessed it.)

The clerk should have said, "Would you like Seaweed on DVD, VHS, or nitrate?!?"
