They should bring back those hilarious UA tags with Chevy Chase explaining how to act in a movie theater.

Seriously, you need to take a hard look at your customer no-service you are providing
Our policies work just fine. We are always packed, messes are minimal. People love our theater and tell us so.

quote: Mike Spaeth
You do not EVER ask a customer to do something simmply because it "inconveniences" you in my book
Its not a matter of convienience, its a matter of respect for other peoples property, and other people in general.

quote: Mike Spaeth
... where is the leadership??
Well, lets look at the leadership. You stand by and let people throw their crap on the floor and walk out of the theater thumbing their nose at you in the process. I see the same act, and remind them that they forgot their items back at their seat. Who sets the example here? I've seen enough employees that stand around the lobby talking and screwing off when they should be doing something. When the movie is out, why not be in the theater? I'm not jumping seats to make sure EVERYONE gets their crap...you make out to be some kind of popcorn nazi. If someone has the balls to leave everything behind with me standing right there, then I have the balls to ask them to pick it up.

quote: Mike Spaeth
You'd be following the other guy right out the door ...
If YOU worked for ME, you'd be the one out the door.... To stand there and watch someone make a mess and not say anything shows lack of motivation or interest in your job.

So their not really 'stupid' customers, but...

It makes me REALLY nervous when I'm taking a break from booth and I'm down in the lobby when I see a man/women fly on out of one of the theaters and start speed walking/running toward the lobby. My first instinct is: "oh shit! Something's wrong with the movie and their rushing out to tell someone!" So of course I start running up the stairs to the booth. Thats when I notice that they're just running to the bathroom and not to the lobby to tell a worker that there's the biggest brain wrap in the history of man in #3 that I have to fix..... It gets me everytime that happens, I swear.

Since when is GOOD customer service a lack of motivation and interest in your job? If Mike worked for you and was out the door....it would be him walking because he works for soemone who doesn't see the bigger picture in customer service. The policy trailers and slides are, as mentioned earlier, general reminders, not directed to one person or a personal attack. Customers don't goto the theatre just to reach the exit and be told they forgot their trash. It's like talking to a 5 year old and reminding them to say thank you. Customers don't goto a theatre to be treated like 5 year olds. Mike has a good point and I agree with him 100%.

I'm not sure if I'm actually talking to people with usher experience here. Or possibly it sounds like upper managment who has forgotten what its like to clean up after people. In either case, it sounds like I'm hearing "It's ok for my little people to clean up after these slobs, and they better not complain" Perhaps if it was you cleaning out auditoriums instead of sitting in the booth or sitting in the office, your tune might change. I acutally help clean things up, and the messes I see make me sick.
I have usher experience, and I'm more than sure everyone is this argument knows what its like to clean up theaters. Dont go around acting like your the only one with problems. We all deal with it, and to me it sounds like you wanna just deal with less and try and pass it off as having balls. Wow, I'm really impressed. [Roll Eyes] To say that maybe we are sitting up in the booth or the office sounds like more whining to me. Here's a tissue, wipe the tears. I help clean theaters too, except the difference is, I know that its my job, and so do my ushers. And I dont just stand there with a stupid look on my face as customers leave, I thank them for coming, I dont ask for volunteers. If its such a problem for you, why dont you try banning customers from your theater for leaving trash behind, lets see how many customers you have left. Probably none, but then again thats probably better for your customers/volunteers.

quote: Frank Dubrois
or maybe I have a little more pride in my theater. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the appearance and condition of our theater, and I intend to keep it that way.

We've gotten compliments for our appearance and condition of our theater and we've done it all on our own. We win!

WTF?! [Confused] People have been leaving popcorn and soda cups on the floor of theaters since popcorn and soda have been sold in theaters! No big deal!

For cryin' out loud! I, myself, have left my popcorn bag on the floor during a movie... and *I* was the one who was going to have to clean it up! I just figured, "What the hell? I'm going to have to clean up the rest of the theater. Why not pick up mine when I pick up the rest?"

Besides, what's the big whoop about one stinkin' cup?! It wouldn't be the first time somebody forgot a cup in a thater. It wouldn't be the last time. In today's theater environment most people wouldn't notice. The majority of peole who do wouldn't think twice about the occasional lone cup.

Finally, if you MUST be so anal retentive that you NEED to get that cup all you have to do is politely walk up to the customer and say, "I'd be happy to throw that cup away for you, if you want me to, sir." If he says, "Yes.", take the cup and toss it in the bin. If he says, "No.", forget about it.

What's the difficulty with that?

quote: Frank Dubrois
If someone has the balls to leave everything behind with me standing right there, then I have the balls to ask them to pick it up.
If somebody had the balls to ask me to pick up the popcorn cup I'd have the balls to tell them, "Fuck off, you lazy bastard and do your damn job!"

Just yesterday during a matinee showing of the Skeleton Key we had 3 boys I would say between the age of 13-15. They got three medium drinks, and one large popcorn. They were the only ones in the theater and they were sitting in the very back row. They came out once during the film and got refills. The film was about to end so I began heading to the theater to make sure it was clean and ready to go for the next show. The boys walked out as I was walking in, I opened the doors and what do I see. Half the theater covered in popcorn. As the boys walked past me they threw there bag and three cups in the trash. I could of A) use Franks method of customer service and run the kids down and made them sweep up the theater. Or B) do my job as a theater manager/booth Supervisor and clean it up and get the theater ready for the next show. What do you think I did?!

Lets start making shit up now...

A) use Franks method of customer service and run the kids down and made them sweep up the theater.
Kurt, where did I say I EVER told anyone to sweep up popcorn? If your going to open your mouth and say I said something, it really should be correct.

Since this thread is now "Rank on Frank" I'm out...you guys cant see my point. Your still looking through the trees to find the forrest. No big deal. If you enjoy letting people leave their crap in the auditoriums, great, no problem, good for you. We do things differently and it works for us. Just a few last comments:

quote: David Nightingale
Since when is GOOD customer service a lack of motivation and interest in your job?
Funny, thats what I was asking, David.

quote: Jeremy Fuentes
and to me it sounds like you wanna just deal with less and try and pass it off as having balls. Wow, I'm really impressed.
Well, your wrong....and I REALLY wasn't interested in impressing you Jeremy, calm down.

We've gotten compliments for our appearance and condition of our theater and we've done it all on our own. We win!

Hooray for you. We accomplish the same thing.

quote:
For cryin' out loud! I, myself, have left my popcorn bag on the floor during a movie... and *I* was the one who was going to have to clean it up!
So you really didnt LEAVE it there did you? You picked it up. [thumbsup] Thanks.

Charming...and we don't let customers talk to employees like that, nor do we let employees talk to cusotmers like that. You'd be asked to NOT return.

I know you guys enjoy movie theater work, but come on, your hostility is a little unnerving. Is this REALLY how other people act and feel? Or is it easier to say behind a keyboard? Randy, I SINCERELY doubt you'd be that bold as to mouth off to a theater employee in that manner. Unless of course, you like to escalate matters and see how far you can push people.

Everyone needs to understand that I wasn't trying to get personal with anyone here. Hope I didnt offend anyone. Eveyone runs their theater as they see fit. Whether people return or not is up to them. Thats all... [beer]

Nobody ever said that.

Yes, I really do clean up after customers and I never ask for their help. I'm lazy, but not that lazy.

your hostility is a little unnerving.
Hostility? Oh you mean the part about us telling you that you stand around with a stupid grin on your face? Oh wait, that was you who said that about us.

Like I said, if you want to sit around with a stupid grin on your face while people leave crap all over your auditorium thats up to you.

Actually, if you check Kurts post, you'll see that MY method was to hand out a broom and tell people to sweep up the theater:

I could of A) use Franks method of customer service and run the kids down and made them sweep up the theater.
Thats what I call EMBELLISHMENT...aka making shit up.

Frank,
quote: Frank Dubrois
If someone has the balls to leave everything behind with me standing right there, then I have the balls to ask them to pick it up.
quote: Frank Dubrois
If there are theaters out there that actually condone leaving crap on the floor, then great for them. Our houses are clean, and our cusomters appreciate it.
quote: Frank Dubrois
We DON'T expect people to leave garbage on the floor like pigs. Ushers are there to clean up spills. Whether by accident OR on purpose, we do that. We dont hand a mop and bucket to people and tell them to clean their own mess just like if people get sick, WE clean that up too. We attempt to get people into the auditoriums in good time, we also find seats when the auditorium is crowded. We clean up the lobby to make it presentable and attractive to customers. We assist concession people when it gets busy. We are able to jump behind box and sell tickets if its busy. We answer customer questions and direct them to their movies. We remember faces of the people who have to leave for a minute to get something from the car. We open and close the doors so people can come and go freely without a door slamming in their face and allow traffic to flow freely. We dust, we mop, we resupply the concession stand, we are at the managers becken call....now I ask you, do we REALLY need to pick-up peoples popcorn buckets and nacho trays too?
last quote from Frank
quote: Frank Dubrois
No one wants to argue with a cutomer, there always right!?! But I don't think that a polite "Oops, don't forget THAT (pointing to their crap on the floor" could be considered an arguement. Certainly if they decide not to pick it up, it falls to usher, but the fact that you noticed and pointed it, may make them a little more conscience about it next time, and the next time, and the time. Someday, maybe when their with their kids, or a date, they may for-go the embarrassment and just take the trash.
YES FRANK AS MUCH AS WE DON'T LIKE IT, THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT...want to know why?! Because they spend there hard earned money at the theater thats why.

I quoted you here to kind of give you an idea of why I said what I said, I didn't put words in your mouth just read what you said and came to the assumption that there is good reason that you would of asked the kids to clean up the theater. Because thats not your job, your job is to clean up spills and this wasn't a spill. [Roll Eyes] Because the last time I checked that was part of my job, makeing sure the theater is in tip top shape for the next customer!

It seems to me Frank that out of the 30 or so of us that post on a regular basis. We are all in agreement that a customer should never under any circumstance be asked to pick up something if it is left behind. You seem to be the only one who thinks it not your job, but the customers(or the way it seems you think from what you post) Don't want to put words in your mouth again [Roll Eyes]

Just one more question, Frank whats your job title at the theater you work at, you say your in managment, but from the 2nd to last quote from you, it sounds like your just a lazy usher who dosn't want to bend over to pick up the tub of popcorn or the candy wrapper on the floor. IMHO, i'm just wondering.

Thank you for you time, and just my 2 cents.

I like the idea of having kids sweep up (whoever suggested it). It could double as a job interview too.

On second thought, they probably wouldn't want to work for the popcorn Nazi.

It's not just the fact that they're customers and spend money in your theatre. They spend LOTS of money in your theatre. A family of four cannot go to the movies for much under $50 now. I think we can pick up after the "slobs" "pigs" or whatever else your customers are to you. I call mine "guests" and I clean up after my "guests" at home too.

Like I said, I'm done here.

Kurt, I also post here on a regualr basis, and I DON'T agree, this is america, so try and grasp that concept. Just because the majority agrees, doesnt always make it the right way to do things. If its right for YOU, then do it. Period. Apology accepted [fu]
