Registered: Jun 99 posted 04-19-2007 06:58 PM                     What a sad evening for anyone who loves LA, the big Westwood houses, and classic theatres in general. I wish I had known about this sooner, I would have flown out for tonight. Hard to belive the National is going down, while the Festival is staying open. I must say, though, that they let the place go to seed. The last time I was in there, in January 2006, the place was pretty grungy. I guess they didn't want to throw any money into a place they knew they were going to lose soon, but geezus, steam the carpets once in a while. I hope somebody salvages the DP70s, finds a home for 'em. I also hope it dosn't suffer the same closing night indignity as the Loews Astor Plaza in NYC. The moment the curtains closed for the last time, they opened again so some workmen could slash the screen open and pull out the speakers. The occasional error isn't likely to affect a reasonable person's already-formed opinion of my communication skills. As with most Mann theatre leases, all they have to do is leave the theatre equipped with a projector(or two) and a sound system. Is it any wonder it didn't survive? Did they put on a good show? (The other two screens look terrible.) I wish I'd known about that place. It has in fact closed as Adam stated. Why didn't they wait until Monday to close? Steal away in the night? This place was fairly old and in need of renovating. They did do some carpet work about a year ago and did major electrical work in the booths about two years ago. The place was also re-roofed about a year ago.
