forget the name..is it the Bruin?
Yes the theatre across from the Village is the Bruin Theatre.

quote: Martin Brooks
Why would anyone program it in this way?
It depends on the movie and studio releasing the film in this market. It has been done before in that area of Westwood, with the same chain. Also it's the multi-plex type of time schedules with the film starting maybe every hour or so for more showings.
So this time you are using large single screen theatres withing a few blocks of each other. It all makes sense with the Hollywood book keeping.

I wonder how much longer these other Mann showcases will hold on. Interesting that the movie FRACTURE opened at the Village, and yet the New Line ad has it listed near the bottom in alphabetical order with all the other theatres. Will this become a trend? (normally, showcase" theatres get a detailed box with showtimes at the top of the ad).

I'm excited, the Solano Twin Drive-In in Corcord, CA is re-opening on May 4th. It's been closed for Drive-In for a few years now.

There are plans to do some free showings to get people back through the gates for the fun.

Ryan Smith, the owner of Lubbock's Stars and Stripes Drive-In, is finally opening his third screen at the site tonight.
The screen has been up since last fall.

Sounds like constant-width screens to me.

Narrow aspect ratio.

The flat films are actually shown bigger than the 'scope films. Driving Miss Daisy should not look bigger than Die Hard. Therefore, constant width screens suck ass.

Ahh I gotcha. From what I've seen I believe all the screens at the Majestic are the opposite of that. All that I've seen need side masking for flat films.

Constant width screens using vertical masking seem ever more common with lots of new stadium seated theaters. I usually get the "uh oh" thought of concern when I see "wall to wall screens" boasted in the ads.

As much as it sucks, constant width screens are the norm for new builds. At least in the Seattle area.

edit:
Also, with the marketing people using terms like "50 foot screens" they might feel like they have to do constant width (otherwise, in flat you aren't holding true to your original statement). Though, obviously that way you're not fully using the vertical.

And even though I haven't looked at our own behind-the-screen masking configuration but I imagine that constant width maskings are easier to set up.

Sorry Chris, Bobby is 100% right. Our business is about exciting people and the easy way out has nothing to do with it.

Constant width is like equipping your Hummer with a 1 litre engine. Or owning a Hummer at all.

Where did I say he was wrong? In fact, I was confirming his statements. I'm not sure how you missed that (especially since it was in the first sentence of my post).

Also, from the tone of your post it seems that you have the misguided notion that I prefer constant width because it is the easy way out. If this is true, please reread the first sentence I wrote and note how I am saying that the usage of constant width is sad. Furthermore, I was merely explaining how constant width would be used in a large amount. Since they're (AFAICT) simpler that would mean they're probably cheaper to build/maintain and therefore a lot of places would use them for that very reason.

Apologies Chris. I get upset when others misread posts. Here I am guilty of the same crime.

Glad you think that constant width is as stupid as I do, with the possible exception of home cinema.
