You really are out of touch with projection vs TV and DVD. I do wish you well. If you put in your time as an usher, you will learn a lot. The former Cinemark Mill Run (Once the best in town, later the worst) is temporarily closed to be converted into a Movie Tavern. They are openly advertising for food workers at this location. Theatre has been running at about 1/2 capacity for some time, shutting down about 1/2 of the theatres. No date for reopening, but expect it to be in the next few weeks. That theatre was picked up from Cinemark in a three venue deal (Hilliard OH, Colombus OH, and Lexington KY) last year. Following the purchase, all three were temporarily run as Starplex Cinemas (Movie Tavern and Starplex are owned by the same party). Columbus is remaining a Starplex, while Hilliard and Lexington are converting in to Movie Taverns. When built in 1990, the Hilliard location was the finest in town, with outstanding presentation and well-adjusted THX rooms. It was the first location in town with digital sound. No improvements were made from about 1996, and it went downhill as AMC, Marcus and others built better theatres. The new NCTA (National Cable Telecommunications Association) theatre is now on-line. It is a screening room venue dedicated for the purposes of promoting Cable Television and its ventures. For instance, it recently ran a screening of the The Sopranos for HBO to kickoff their final season. The room features 2 35/70 projectors (Kinoton DP75), a Dolby CP200 completely decked out with just about all of the bells and whistles, including internal surround EX performed in the Acc. Rack. It has one of the rare Dolby SI-1 studio interfaces so various sources may be quickly an painlessly be patched in (it has isolation transformers to elmininate ground loops or hum...particularly important when dealing with video sources) as well as level trimmers. Naturally, it has DLP video projection too and a Dolby DMA8/DMA8 Plus for audio from video interface. The amps are QSC's DCA line, the monitor/crossover is a THX D1138 because it is now a certified THX Cinema facility. It sports five QSC SC-423 screen speakers (with th MH-1075 high power M/H section). The 5-speaker array was primarily chosen to more closely fit the sound to either 4:3 or 16:9 videos but it doesn't hurt for any possible 70mm shows either. LC and RC are also preferred when playing back straight Left/Right sources without pro-logic. The surrounds and subs (4645C) are JBL This room also has "Butt-Kickers" as well (only used if the client wants them). I think they wanted to offset from their previous theatre in their old factiliy which was notably darker with golds/browns/purples...etc. The seats are "butter" colored in this one which makes everyone's eyebrows go up thinking "they'll show the dirt" but they have held up find thus far. They wanted a brighter room and they got it.  |  IP: Logged John T. Damn. How dare they! I was just in Westwood yesterday. I guess I should've taken some photos of the theatre. I did, however, get some shots of the Bruin because I wanted a shot of the marquee featuring "Grindhouse." (The Bruin, by the way, is one of my least favorite Westwood theatres overall, but it happens to have my favorite marquee.) The upscale nosh is among the high-end amenities Mann Theatres will offer when its 14-screen movie theater complex opens in fall 2008 at The Oaks shopping center in Thousand Oaks. Adult patrons willing to pay more will have access to a private entrance leading to a lounge with a full bar, food, and a balcony with leather seats and plenty of space where viewers can see four of the 14 screens. Attendants also will be on hand. The new complex, to be built as part of The Oaks' expansion and renovation, will be a first for both Ventura County and Mann Theatres the first time the county will have a theater with a full bar, and Mann's first luxury theater. Prices have not been set. The development illustrates the growing trend of movie theaters positioning themselves as all-encompassing destinations for entertainment seekers. "It is a total evening out instead of just seeing a movie and going home," said Peter Dobson, chief executive officer of Mann Theatres. "We will be offering the usual fare for the children and the younger teens. The VIP experience is very much for those over 21. We know there is a certain audience that won't go to the movies because kids are running around the auditorium." In Los Angeles, the ArcLight Cinema has made a name for itself by offering reserved seating for movies, a café bar menu that includes hummus and tapenade dip, and "21+ Screenings" where viewers can sip a cocktail while watching new releases and modern classics like "The Goonies." Patrick Corcoran, director of media and research and California operations chief for the National Association of Theatre Owners, said an amenity-laden movie experience is something his group is seeing more of, not just in urban centers like Los Angeles but across the country. "Theater companies are exploring ways to attract customers interested in a different kind of moviegoing experience," he said. More entertainment options were one thing residents told the Oaks owner Macerich Co. that they wanted as part of the expansion. Senior property manager Julie Ladd said Mann's plans were a perfect fit with the sophisticated, casual feel the company is aiming for in the renovation. The mall's location, along the Highway 101 corridor, and the area's demographics make it a desirable location for such a theater, which will likely draw a regional audience, Dobson said. Vie Caswell likes the idea of martinis and attendants while seeing a movie. The Thousand Oaks resident can't remember the last movie she saw in a theater. "I would get a martini and some snacks to see a movie," she said. "I think Thousand Oaks is ready to do something different. It's kind of stagnant." Diane Johnson of Simi Valley, however, doesn't think sushi and a cocktail would lure her to the theater. "I don't go to the shows that often," she said. "I go to plays. They're better than the shows. I'd rather watch them on DVD." Tania Figueroa of Encino said she would travel for the VIP treatment on occasion. Her friends, Amber Daugherty of Newbury Park and Lyda Caceres of Granada Hills, agreed it would be fun. "It probably wouldn't be something I'd do every time," Figueroa said. "I'd probably make it a night out." Daugherty said parking is difficult at the ArcLight cinema, and having something local would be a plus.
