After a delay of about 4+ years, construction has FINALLY BEGAN on the Krikorian Pico Rivera 15. Walls are up already and this theatre could open by December.

That really sucks that AMC Wiegand Plaza 8 Theatres in Encinitas closed down. When I lived in Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and La Costa areas, I always went to that theatre. Those were the good old days. For those of you who don't know, when the theatre was originally built, it was a 6 screen complex and two more screens were added in the 1990's.

OK so I'm a movie theatre dork, and the new Regal 15 just opened here and they're doing $1 movies for 3 preview days before the grand opening and I couldn't resist checking it out, sneaked out of work for about an hour this afternoon. Where's the dork smiley?

Now bear with me while I nitpick some things and compliment them on other things and make a few general observations. I'm probably most skilled at the nitpicking though.

The digital movie schedule board above the box office is hard to read. It can't accommodate the full text of long movie titles. Mylars with logos and pictures are better.

I bought a ticket to "The Prestige". House #12. Picked out a seat pretty far toward the back.

Comfy seats, plenty of legroom. Armrests have lots of padding.

Noticed right away that the door to the auditorium SLAMS. SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! SLAM!

Got there early enough to see most of FirstLook or whatever they call the digital preshow. It looked WAY better than crosstown rival Cinemark's digital preshow. Much brighter and clearer.

The last part of the preshow sternly warns the audience no fewer than 4 times to silence cellphones. Yay.

Movie starts (no trailers). Immediately had trouble understanding the dialog. Had to really pay close attention. Everything else sounded right, but dialog was just a little too low. Walked down the stairs to the entry-level aisle that crosses the auditorium and the dialog sounded fine. Don't know what that means.

The right edge of the picture was very fuzzy. Other than that the image quality was very good. Print looked almost new except for some flecks of dirt.

The screen has top masking that closed for scope after the preshow. The 54-foot screen measured 30 feet when I counted the ceiling tiles. (The local newspaper giddily reported that all the screens are 54 feet).

After about 10 minutes I leave #12. There are two Regal suits standing in the hall near the door. Probably here from the home office. I overhear them talking about the effectiveness of different carpet sweepers (I am not making this up, they were discussing carpet sweepers). "You know, the Doreck SLAM! Model 5000 sweeper SLAM! has an angled head SLAM! that makes it quite maneuverable SLAM! but I still prefer the good old Frampton Model 123-C sweeper because SLAM! it does a better job at picking up SLAM unpopped kernels." SLAM! They are oblivious. SLAM!

The surround speakers are Klipsch. Does that mean all the speakers are probably Klipsch?

That's one of the reasons why Cinemark will not use them.

Means they may have a speaker out of phase, amp not tuned up all the way, levels not set, speaker not aimed correctly.

Plate probably needs to be cut a bit more or not positioned correctly. I would hope it is not a turret issue being a new theatre but could happen.

Not all screen sizes are the same.

In a shocking turn of events

The Carmike Lake Walden Cinema 8 is now closed down. Reasons unknown. I know that they are gutting the theatre. Rumor has it that the Cobb Lakeside 18, which is a far superior theatre, took the business from them.

I haven't heard anything else about it

As the digital era ramps up.. you will see most all Carmikes under 10 screens closing.. or being sold off.

Construction is in full swing at the AMC-Loews Universal 19 in Universal City, CA.

Its going stadium seating, digital sound and digital projectors apparently in a couple auditoriums. Its getting gutted.

I saw 300 there yesterday, only theatres 8 - 13 are open (plus the IMAX and upstairs theatres), only one concession stand, and both balcony theatres are closed. Its a good thing AMC is doing this before the 20th anniversary of the theatre this year. Also gone is the Cineplex blue paint outside, its now AMC Orange/Red and the west box office is history.

Months later, work began on a brightly painted, 53,895-square-foot structure along Peppers Ferry Road. On Wednesday, scaffolding still covered the first floor of the new theater's exterior.

While it is unclear when that work will be done, Poldiak said construction will begin at the site of the old theater Monday, when crews begin renovating former theater space into college classrooms.

New River Community College is expected to move into the old theater in time to begin the fall semester. The college will occupy 23,000 square feet at the mall, where it plans to offer more than 80 classes.

That's not accurate. Carmike has converted a lot of 8-plex locations and even smaller over to digital projection.

The real issue is with older theaters that can't even accommodate digital surround sound, much less fit in digital projection. Carmike has already closed several such locations and will likely close more of them as the conversion program continues. In some markets, Carmike may build a new theater to replace the one being closed. I know they're doing that in Ardmore, OK, not too far from where I live. They may pull out of some other markets entirely if their numbers aren't very good.

Regal made a long-term contract with Klipsch to be the exclusive Regal speaker provider sometime after absorbing Act III but before bankruptcy. I believe that's how Klipsch expanded into the cinema business in the first place.

In some cases, it's a little baffling. We have a decade-old Carmike nine-plex slope building...a converted supermarket...that does so little business they only run one evening show Mon-Thu and charge $6 admission, which is actually cheaper than their small popcorn.

And yet they have nine digital projectors.

The former Apache Theatre in St. Anthony Village, MN was knocked down this past week.

The theatre was formerly a Cinerama house, later carved to 6 screens, and for a period was operated by Tom Letness of The Heights, which was only a couple miles away.

The Apache had not been open for several years.

The original post on CINEMATREASURES.COM says that this theatre had a "Cinerama auditorium", but the theatre does not appear on Roland Lataille's CINERAMA site.

It's possible the Cinema Treasures poster is confusing a later 70mm engagement for CINERAMA. A single screen theatre built in the '60's would very possibly have 70mm equipment.

The United Artists Biltmore Square 6 theatre is now closed here in Asheville. I understand that it will reopen at a later date under new management.

Looks like Dickinson is getting to the IMAX business.
