It is a twin from the mid '70s I think. Simplex projectors, ORC platters and lamps, Smart sound. Two 200-300 seat houses with recent comfortable seats. The new operator plans to do first run as soon as everything is ready. Located just outside the Fort Lee main gate it should do well especially with the recently begun 20,000 person expansion of Ft. The Lyric Cinema Cafe,a twin screen arthouse that includes a cafe and bar was opened about 1 1/2 years ago in Fort Collins, Colorado in a 1960's era building that had been a laundromat. A very unique, fun little theater. It is named for the Lyric Theater, a single screen movie house that once operated about 2 blocks up the street. The Kress Cinema and Lounge, a single screen arthouse with a large attached bar, opened about 5 months ago in Greeley,Co. It is a beautiful theater that was built in the historic Kress building that once housed a department store. I have attended movies at both theaters. Closures: The Cinderella Twin Drive-In in Englewood,Colorado closed after the '07 season and completely demolished in February '08. The marquee still stands untouched although the entire lot is now covered with condos in the late stages of construction. The Starlite Twin Drive-In in Sterling,Colorado closed after its '07 season due to low attendance (Sterling is a small city in the middle of nowhere). The owner (who also owns the indoor Fox Theater in town) has quietly hinted that he may re-open it if there is enough interest. The Comanche Drive-In in Buena Vista, Colorado is not exactly closed but its future is up in the air (no pun intended). The theater was open intermittently throughout the '07 season due to sound equipment issues. On May 8th of 2008, the owner's wife very suddenly and unexpectedly passed away right before the drive-in was to reopen, so needless to say, the drive-in never opened that year. The owner (who also built the theater) is about 80 years old and his wife was some 15 years his junior so I personally suspect that she had quite a bit to do with the theater's upkeep and management. It is still unknown if it will reopen this year. On a side note, I recently visited the Carmike 5 in Greeley,Colorado and am wondering about its future. It is very clean, has good sound and recently converted to D-Cinema however I did notice that the building itself seems to be in a state of disrepair. It is also located across the street from a newer Cinemark 16 and has no stadium seating. I'm guessing its days are numbered but at the same time, wonder why they would convert every screen to D-Cinema (which they did in '06 or so) if they intend to close it.  |  IP: Logged Sam Graham AKA: "The Evil Sam Graham". I happened to find myself driving through Watseka, Illinois this afternoon, and the Princess 2 is no more. For that matter, the Princess is also no more. They took the marquee down and everything. I think they're turning it into studio apartments, of all things. The Princess 2 still stands and the marquee reads "Re-opening soon", but I'm pretty sure it has said that for a long time now. It will be called the Shiloh 14, after the Shiloh Crossing development where it's located. The developer (a local guy from Billings) said "The installation is probably the best you'd find in this country." Of course he didn't mention that the place will be trashed in a few years, but I guess in Billings that goes without saying.  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." Or the residents of Billings? My guess is the blame should go 100% to the people living in Montana visiting that theater rather than executives in Georgia who never visit Montana. But it will probably (and typically) be extended to the folks running Carmike than anything else. The shame and blame needs to be placed where it really belongs: with the scumbags who actually do the trashing rather than the people who merely lease the building. I'm so tired of that crap. And, yeah, there's a LOT of white-trash, in-bred filth right here in Lawton, OK who does plenty of damage to our local Carmike theater. I'm not blaming that on suits in Columbus, GA either. I would guess the people in Montana are far more respectful of their surroundings than most big-city types. (I've seen enough big-city cinemas to bear that out.) You are lucky to live in a place where the Carmikes are maintained. We just don't have that in Montana. The Wynnsong 10 in Billings (built in 1997) is trashed today because Carmike does not do any maintenance on it. It's just normal wear and tear, which you will find everywhere. They just don't do anything except the bare minimum. Spill a soda on the floor? The stain will still be there months later. Location has nothing to do with it. The management and executives are absolutely to blame, because if the place was taken care of and occasional damage fixed, the public would respect it. My own theatre is proof - if anything happens, it's fixed immediately, and we haven't had a cut seat or any graffiti in years.  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." If I owned one I feel like I would have to stand guard over the place with a Heckler & Koch MP5 sub-machine gun. Lawton isn't any more special than Billings, other than perhaps the manager of Lawton's Carmike theater is a lot more on the ball and vocal about getting broke things fixed than the managers of other Carmike theaters. Nevertheless it disgusts me to no end how the filthy pigs break stuff in the theater in the first place. They'll tear away arm rests off chairs, slice open seats and sling sodas or smear Gummy Bears™ on the screen. These are people who live in Lawton, OK. They don't go anywhere near Carmike's corporate HQ. Of course, it's Carmike's responsibility to pay for fixing all that broken stuff. Still I'll direct the blame where it needs to go: to the jerks right here who did it. It's too bad theaters are largely powerless to do anything about vandalism. Even if you had surveillance cameras capturing video of the culprits doing their deeds those same culprits wouldn't feel any shame at all if you put the video of their acts on display for everyone to see. Renaissance Rialto (Alan Michaan) of the San Francisco east bay will no longer opertate the Orinda Theatre. The operators of the Rheem 4 (Moraga, CA) are now running this theatre. Many residents drove to Jax or even further southbound to see a movie prior to EPIC's opening; we'll have to see if that stops with their multiplex. EPIC also opened a location in Clermont, FL, a month or two prior to this.  |  IP: Logged
