As a university professor, I taught during the day and did research at night. I would usually take a break around nine, however, calling up the strategy game Warcraft on the Internet and playing with an online team.

One night I was paired with a veteran of the game who was a master strategist. With him at the helm, our troops crushed opponent after opponent, and after six games we were undefeated.

Suddenly my fearless leader informed me his mom wanted him to go to bed.

"How old are you?" I typed.

"Twelve," he replied,

"How old are you?"

Feeling my face redden, I answered, "Eight." [Eek!]

After registering for his high school classes, my son burst into the house, filled with excitement.

"Dad," he announced in one breath, "I got all the classes I wanted. But I have to have my school supplies by tomorrow.

I need a protractor and a compass for geometry, a dictionary for English, a dissecting kit for biology, and a car for driver's ed." [Big Grin]

While walking to our residence dining hall one afternoon, I overheard my friend ask, "Who did you give it to?"

As an English major, I try to resist the bending of grammar rules and so pointed out, "It's 'Whom did you give it to,' not 'who'."

Used to such comments, he turned to me in exasperation and asked: "Does it really matter? Who, whom, what's the difference anyway?"

From behind us someone quipped, "An 'm'." [Smile]

A professor stood before his class of twenty senior organic biology students, about to hand out the final exam.

"I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after summer. So that no one gets their GPA messed up because they might have been celebrating a bit too much this week, anyone who would like to opt out of the final exam today will receive a 'B' for the course."

There was much rejoicing in the class as students got up, walked to the front of the class, and took the professor up on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Anyone else? This is your last chance." One final student rose up and opted out of the final.

The professor closed the door and took attendance of those students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourself," he said. "You all get 'A's." [Big Grin]

Dean, to the physics department... "Why do I always have to give you guys so much money, for laboratories and expensive equipment and stuff. Why couldn't you be like the math department - all they need is money for pencils, paper and waste-paper baskets. Or even better, like the philosophy department. All they need are pencils and paper." Over the years, parents and teachers have been shocked by pupils' exam howlers. There are the classic mistakes, such as the belief that Hitler's first name was 'Heil'. During class, the chemistry professor was demonstrating the properties of various acids. "Now I'm dropping this silver coin into this glass of acid. Will it dissolve?"

"No sir," a student called out.

"No?" queried the professor. "Perhaps you can explain why the silver coin won't dissolve."

"Because if it would, you wouldn't have dropped it in." [Big Grin]

Our school librarian, frustrated by students not returning books on time, placed a large grey pouch beside the library door.

A note in the school's daily announcements read: "All late books must be returned to the old gray bag in the library."

It was signed, Mrs. Gray. [Big Grin]

It was the usual muddy day in the country. Our first grade teacher, Miss Green, had just finished putting the 36th boot on the 18th pair of little feet and was anxious to finish the last pair so she could go to lunch.

The last pair of boots was for little Robert Johnson, a quiet boy. Miss Green had a very difficult time getting his boots on as they were a bit too small for his growing feet, but she finally won the battle.

To her dismay, Robert looked blandly up into her face and announced, "Teacher, these boots aren't mine." In a hurry, but wanting to be kind, Miss Green groaned, but with grim gentleness removed the boots and straightened her aching back.

Whereupon Robert continued, "They're my little brother's, but Mommy said I could wear them to school today." [Big Grin]

As a new medical student, I was very nervous about my performance in dissection classes, especially as other students had been bragging about their parents' jobs as top surgeons, and their previous experience at this kind of thing.

Two hours into the practical, the demonstrator singled me out and complimented me on my ability with a scalpel.

He then asked me if I had inherited the gift from a family member, "Yes sir," I replied. "My granddad was a butcher." [Big Grin]

Your morning smile....

A 1st grade school teacher had twenty-six students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-year-olds, because the last one is a classic!

1. Don't change horses until they stop running.

3. It's always darkest before Daylight Saving Time.

4. Never underestimate the power of termites.

5. You can lead a horse to water but How?

6. Don't bite the hand that looks dirty.

7. No news is impossible

8. A miss is as good as a Mr.

10. If you lie down with dogs, you'll stink in the morning.

11. Love all, trust Me.

12. The pen is mightier than the pigs.

13. An idle mind is the best way to relax.

14. Where there's smoke there's pollution.

15. Happy the bride who gets all the presents.

16. A penny saved is not much.

17. Two's company, three's the Musketeers.

18. Don't put off till tomorrow what you put on to go to bed.

19. Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and You have to blow your nose.

20. There are none so blind as Stevie Wonder.

21. Children should be seen and not spanked or grounded.
