This is too much of a generalisation. I'm straight and would feel very uneasy and embarrassed about doing any of the 'in public' things on this list. IMHO, these relationships, whether hetero- or homosexual, are most successfully conducted in private. As for constant chatter about other halves, the colleagues and friends I have who do this most often are gay.

My theory is that couples, both gay and straight, who feel the need to push their relationships down other people's throats (not to mention their own) in public places do so because of insecurity issues. The difference - thanks to political correctness - is that if I object to a heterosexual couple bringing their relationship into the workplace and disrupting what goes on there it's a valid objection, but if I do likewise to a gay couple, well that's homophobia.

Let's see:

I'm married for 31 years.
My wife and I both wear wedding rings.
My wife wears an engagement ring.
We still hold hands in public.
We still kiss in public.
We never were good dancers.
I talk about her and my family with co-workers.
I've got lots of family photos in my office.

I'm not insecure, I'm just happy AND secure with who I am. [Cool]

People deserve to be secure and happy regardless of their race, age, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or whatever other differences we may have. It's called by many names: human rights, dignity, respect, peace, freedom, etc. Share the pride in who you are, but don't expect others to be exactly like you.

I'd like to see a "straight pride" month and parade. Why not? I'm proud to be straight. I deserve an official month and a parade. Of course when I say something like that the world would automatically assume that I am homophobic and/or hate gays, neither of which is true. But I am all for equal opportunities and that is equal.

For instance, I recently had a boss who was gay. He would very clearly give preferential treatment to other employees who were gay. Even some of those gay employees admitted that. If I were to complain to the corporate office, I'd be gay bashing and most likely dismissed from the job. However if the tables were turned and a gay employee said the straight manager was giving preferential treatment to straight people, then the manager would be fired. Lousy company, I know. But that's how it works. I hate political correctness. It'll be the end of us all.

Next time I get turned down for a high paying job, I'll pretend I'm not a straight white male and sue the company. I'll say that they didn't hire me because I was gay and maybe Muslim. The company wouldn't want headlines that read "so-and-so company refuses to hire gay Muslim" and get a bad rap.

Sure, you'll need groups & demonstrations for other majority groups, too! Don't forget the "White Power" groups, they get to wear the wildest costumes to their meetings. And the meetings! They're the most heavily set-designed of them all!

Sheesh, I can't even think how many folks I've worked with that kept employees from advancing & harassed them because they were black, women, gay, or just didn't fit a standard pattern. Your employer was wrong, & should have been reported. You're being motivated by the same fear to speak up that other minorities are often faced with.

Yup. That's because being a majority nowadays is wrong and politically incorrect (especially among companies that make it a goal to be as diversified as possible... just so they can say that they are diversified). You are looked down upon for oppressing everyone else. When someone sees the majority oppressing someone, it's evil and should be stopped (agree). But when a minority oppresses a majority, it's justified as "payback" and it's seen as OK.

I don't want "white power" groups as that is just stupid. But a white history month would be cool. Too bad there isn't another month with just 28 days. Either that or we could move Black History Month to a month with 30 days just to be fair. [Smile]

Things are changing a bit, though. Here in Bakersfield, CA, legal services for the community college system have shut down both the Martin Luther King Center and Chicano Cultural Center at our local community college for being in violation of Prop 209, which bans public educators from giving specific groups preferrential treatment.

Discrimination and picking on people for being of a particular race, gender, faith, sexual orientation, et cetera, happens, and that sucks. However, most forms of such prejudice and bashing are generally viewed as being socially unacceptable ... with one exception.

That one instance being with attitudes towards those who are above their 'ideal weight' (I'm speaking from my relative point of view of living in the USA). And this is something I find to be both irritating, and confusing. Irritating as I am one of those curvy girls that is destined to never be as thin as a supermodel, and confusing as a very large part of the population of this country is overweight.
