They redid the Grant Park North Garage and decked over the Metra/Electric (ex-Illinois Central) for several blocks and also built a new garage to the east of the railroad. The park is atop all of that. Years ago that was all railyards as the freight tracks went all the way up to piers and warehouses on the south edge of the Chicago River (now the site of the Illinois Center office towers and hotels). But it wasn't that many years ago when you could still find strings of surplus boxcars stored in the area where the park is now. The railroad originally was at the edge of or even in (on trestle) Lake Michigan; everything east of it now is landfill. Is this sort of LED display the new standard for large outdoor video displays? Seems that the resolution isn't bad (ignore the grid of glass blocks) and considering that this broad daylight the brightness is good too. Perhaps it would work as a drive-in screen. LED-based displays have virtually taken over the entire outdoor electronic display market. Full motion video LED displays are very expensive. You'll only find them in very high profile locations. Chicago's Millenium Park easily qualifies as such a place. Barco put together a cool LED video system for the Fashion Mall in Las Vegas. Times Square is lousy with those things. These displays are also naturals for giant shopping mall signs or signs for Indian gaming casinos. The largest full color video LED displays are usually found in sports stadiums. There's a new display at Jacob's Field in Cleveland that is one of the largest in the world. I forget the exact size but it is somewhere in the 160' X 70' area. It and another long, skinney dislay recessed into the outfield fence cost more than $7 million. The much more common type of LED signs are those which only display a single color, and typically much of that being text. Our company is putting up two full color LED message centers that display only text and color graphics at two bank locations in Oklahoma. Even without video content the package runs $200,000. Considering the very high price (and not very high resolution), there is no way these things would ever be able to replace a standard film-based setup for showing movies. Systems using 5-watt wedge based lamps are being phased out of production. The old "flipper" style systems for displaying text alone are only sold for special niche categories, like some overhead highway advisory signs. And even those are being replaced by all-LED systems. I can't believe it came out! I had to zoom all the way in and try to hold the camera while driving, then crop a bit of the shot out so it wouldn't be too small to read the plate on the forum. I took 3 shots and all were plenty readable. Anyone know what state that plate is from? It's certainly not a Texas plate. Joe, the driver was just some dopey guy in his 20s.
