My grandmother had a late edition of Mrs. Beeton's Household Management, which is often said to be the definitive guide to being a housewife in Victorian Britain. Perhaps surprisingly, it contradicts a lot of the stereotypes. The basic idea it puts forward is that the husband might be the master of his world when he's away at work, but once he steps back into your house he'd better tow the line or else. The section on diet contains a lengthy tract on the need to dissuade your husband from drinking and smoking too much; another chapter talks about how important it is to make sure he has regular, meaningful contact with the children, and not to allow him to disappear into the 'smoking room' after dinner without having first done his bit as a father!

The book as a whole challenges a lot of stereotypes about the role of women in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. In short, it argues that running a domestic household is a profession and a career in itself - an important point in the days before supermarkets, frozen foods and all the other technological delights which enable me to survive without being married existed!

A Dirty Harry & Harry Potter Fan dared me to design this a couple of months ago. The head looks like crap. But, oh well.

JFC Ethan! I'm really surprised you asked that question! I "used" to think you were a cool and smart guy... but I guess I'll have to re-think all that.

"Felix" is pacing in my post to help illustrate that many people pace while they think....

It is a sad day in hell when I have to explain such simple things as that.

Hahahahaha that's too funny, Steve!

But, I think he's just clasping his hands behind his back while he paces and thinks about Ethan's stupid question. [evil] [Razz] [Big Grin]
