[1mil NAB rolls] They were recorded between 1968 & 1975. There was no sign of shedding or degredation, I was plesantly surprised with the results and high quality of the playback. A roll of BASF tape shedded heaps requiring stops every 10 minutes or so for a head clean.....and a roll of Ampex 406 behaved fairly well. These tapes had been spooled once every five years or so and stored in a corner of the spare room. ...I wonder how the resulting CDs will be in 35 years.  |  IP: Logged Tim Reed Better Projection Pays Posts: 5246 From: Northampton, PA Registered: Sep 1999 posted 01-10-2008 05:28 PM                       Wow, that's quite a feat, Rick. I have yet to take one out and find any deterioration. All were recorded on Ampex and then later Skullys 1/2 trk. Seems to me if they lasted this long, I wouldn't anticipate that all of a sudden they start going south some 30 years later. And this storage room, btw, has no particular climate control at all. Tim, what brand are your tapes? -- during the day there were LOTS of "off" brands out there. For mastering, we never used anything but Scotch or Ampex high output mylar. We duped on acetate base tapes, again Scotch mostly and I think some of that stuff did develope a slight horizontal curl, but still played well. Have you tried using Film Guard? Or possibly FilmTreat? Even Audiotape 1265, even being acetate based, was good stuff as well.
