Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-04-2008 09:17 AM                     Frank, Dolby always intended the Dolby Digital soundtrack to self-update. After all, there are data blocks on the film in addition to the sound information. As such, if a soundtrack contains a later firmware than what is in the DA10/20, the soundtrack has the ability to load the later firmware into the processor. On the DA10...this only worked once...on subsequent updates, it would crash the unit. I suspect that Dolby is pretty much done with updating their firmware for the decoding of the digital soundtrack so...it might be possible to take a DA10, purge any dynamically updated firmware and then let it get updated on the first film it plays to have the latest version. Someone at Dolby would need to comment on this further as I have no direct knowledge of what the versions are and what the status is. My memory on this is a big foggy now but I believe on the Cat 609, there is a rotary switch and something like position 6 forces the firmware that is on the rom to run regardless what may have been flashed to the unit. This is not the same card that is in the DA20 though it looks similar. There may even be a position on the card to flush the flash ROM too. Personally, I've had very good luck with the DA10 and was sad to see it leave the Uptown...I think did a better job on changeovers. But who can argue when Dolby says well give you a current unit for free if you give us the old one? Especially when they tell you that the old one WILL have problems. Steve  |  IP: Logged Sam D. When Dolby did the EC11 code change, it left this unit dead. You could play films struck before the code change, but nothing made later. Hmmm, pretty clever. If that is correct, then I won't have to be so cautious about getting a used DA20. And so an older DA20 won't have any problems with the spanking new BACP digital readers I want to get? They plug directly into each other without any other interface hodgepodge or worries about their respective incept dates?  |  IP: Logged Sam D. I called a fellow at Dolby (New York) who came out to look at it. (I wish I could remember his name; he worked hard to try to find the problem.) The problem seem to have coincided with a 'film-loaded' firmware update around late 2001 - early 2002.
