Whitish Expert Film Handler Posts: 103 From: Seattle, WA, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 07-11-2004 04:23 AM                     Despite the proximity of myself to Pauls Theatres I didnt meet him till the film tech drink of 2002 at Showest. He was a part of the Projectionist Union that Im now the Business Agent of. I called to tell all in the Seattle area that myself and Pete Kerchinsky could think of that might have known him.Im very sad. So few are left that knew what presentation and projection were really all about. Brad, I can only say thanks a million for giving us this incredible forum to share on. And the work you go to for the film tech drinks every year. Its really great to get to meet people that all care,really care, about film. Paul will be missed for his kindness,caring, and willingness to help out any that had problems. I had only once spoken to him about two years ago. He seems like a real 'old time' gentleman. You could read from his posts, that he was able to combine new techonolgy with old time craftmanship. I feel a little extra sad, because 64 years is not that old. Paul and I had many Email conversations in connection with our other common interest, broadcast electronics. We exchanged diagnosis and repair information, often solving big problems with little effort. Paul was a true gentleman and also a great engineer. Two professions will be missing a great person. My sympathy to all of Paul's relatives and dear friends. Before I joined FT Paul G. Thompson was one of the few people I could recognize, I guess anyone called the weenie man would be noticable. Also, after I joined and starting asking questions he was one of the few people that would help me out without a "holier than thou art" attitude. If not for him I probably would not have stayed on film-tech. Definitely a sad loss for FT and everyone who knew him. I'm sorry for those of you who have never met the man, because he was quite a guy. I've hung out with him at Showwest and he's stayed with me and Brad on his visits to Texas, so I'm lucky I got to know the man as well as I did. The wealth of knowledge and experience Paul had was intimating to me to say the least, although intimation is the one word that wouldn't come to mind when you're in his presence. In fact, he was very affiable. And the input he would give on equipment... if he liked it, he'd let you know why. If he didn't, he'd bitch about it and you'd be entertained for quite awhile. That's just the kind of guy he was. Whether he'd shuffle about in the morning groggy as all hell, or in high spirits and getting all goofy on you, you just couldn't help but laugh, or at the very least crack a smile to yourself. And boy did that man love his coffee! I guess he really needed it, because he was always on the go. He was the kind of guy that would pick up the tab for everyone at mealtime. You never got the feeling there was any generation gap when he'd talk to you no matter how young you were (unless he gave dates), and he loved movies of just about any genre save the war ones. He was just a really great guy, and I'll truly miss him. My heart goes out to his loved ones. At least I can take comfort in the fact that I can go back and re-read his posts and laugh or at least crack a smile. Paul stopped by here a couple of times in his travels, and we had coffee and good talk. What a cool, down-to-earth guy. Being less tech-oriented than some, I didn't get a chance to know him as well as some of the rest of you did, but it's obvious that the industry has lost a good friend as well as a great font of knowledge.
