While I agree that many people use Myspace as a form of advertising or downright spam; as to it being a useless site, I have to disagree strongly. I get quite a good bit of practical use out of it, not just brainless 'time wasting'. I've always been interested in foreign languages, and am usually enrolled in a language class or two ... I find people on Myspace from a country that speaks the language I'm learning and get legitimate practice that has on more than one occasion helped me out in class.

You know, there doesn't seem to be any more advertising on there than there was two years ago. The same blocked out portions of the pages advertise the same five or six things over and over, and that was always the model.

The only exceptions are that "products" get their own profiles now, which people can add as friends and that just generates hits. Oh, and the HUGE X-Men: The Last Stand campaign (which was unavoidable, considering who owns the site) which claims you can up your Top 8 to a Top 16 or Top 20, just by adding the X-Men profile to your Friends list.

It's easy enough to ignore that crap.

As for the site as a whole being useless? It's connected me with more people from my past (who I wanted to connect with again!) than my main website, my e-mail accounts, whatever listings I have in whatever Internet White Pages type sites are out there, etc., have done in the last 10 years.

It's a networking site that's branching out further, and more effectively, than any Internet system currently in use, has it not? Wasn't that the goal, or at least the logical inevitability, of the idea behind connecting one computer to another?

I would say yes. Now, does that, in itself, make MySpace evil, as many claim? Well, THAT is the debatable point. I can see both sides of it. I just hopped on this bandwagon a little earlier than most, when it was still innocent, so it still seems innocent to me, and perhaps I'm biased. Can't I see that "Tom" is trying to take over the world? Nope! I'm completely oblivious to that fact. [Wink] [Razz]

Awww... you found people... Now I want you to walk outside and HOPEFULLY you can find more people... and tell them about your Myspace profile... because I'm sure they'd want to check it out... [Big Grin]

Seriously dude... 10 years? Maybe these people do not want to be found by you. [Razz]

(To clarify, I meant: more people have found ME through MySpace, as opposed to stumbling upon my website or Googling my name.)

Yes, Jen, we all know why you cancelled your MySpace account. We're not all personable, social people comfortable with the outside world. There's a reason some of us work in dark, isolated rooms, far from the public view, with machinery that understands us better than any woman ever did, or could.

Awww... Someone go give Brian a hug. [Smile] Let it all out... it'll be ok. No one is going to take away that little space of yours. [Cool]

After MySpace went down a few days ago, reportedly because of the heatwave, and after their recent maintenence, I know a couple of people who came back to find that their pages had been basically reset so that their background image and any videos they had posted on their page had completely disappeared.

The only users this seemed to affect were users whose pages had a specific type of political content (that I won't mention to avoid political discussion).
Many of them think it has something to do with MySpace trying to "censor" certain types of politial views and using the maintenence and being temporarily knocked out as a cover, basically allowing themselves to say "oops, sorry" once they come back up.
I'm not so sure this is the case, though.

I didn't look too long, but I looked at some users who also use their space for the same purpose and they were either unaffected or their material was wiped out but restored without them having logged back in.
I checked a few that I knew were not political, and they seemed unaffected.

Have any of you (or anyone you know) who have videos on your pages that are NOT political had the same problem?

For a short time on Sunday or Monday my profile was reset save for the tagline, views counter, and pics. (no political content or videos on my page) While 'reset' the last login date read 1/1/0001, the correct date returned after the page restored.

It came back completely as it was after several minutes.

Several other pages, most of them non-political had similar problems.

What is up with this site lately... I know it's free but it's sucked ass. Are they transferring over to a new server?
