Quotes from IMDB.com, biography of Steve Irwin:

"He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is that it be filmed. If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape."

"If something ever happens to me, people are gonna be like 'we knew a croc would get him!'"

To all of the film-techers who are saddened because of this death, my condolences go out to you. Just think of it as a show that just got cancelled. You won't see any new episodes.

I was trying to bash those that responded to his death with sadness or surprise.

Chad, my thoughts exactly. These people obviously knew him, they are referring to him as "Steve".

Why do people start threads about famous people dying? This is news that everyone already knows. The only reason I would post a death on this forum is if it was a death of a colleague and I wanted to inform some people that may have know them.

quote: Michael Schaffer
How many people died today of hunger, wars, and crime?

Well said. Too many, but they aren't famous enough to start threads on forums, or see on the news every hour on the hour.

I was really shocked by this as well. Of all the stupid ways for the Croc Hunter to die... a freaking STINGRAY?? Ugh. Kind of like Chuck Yeager dying in a bicycle wreck.

I was hoping to meet this chap one day. Guess I'll never get the chance. I learned a lot about different animals from him and his TV shows and movie. I even learned a little bit about sting rays in his death.

How very sad. RIP. [Frown]

You make it sound as if famous people dying should never be discussed between friends. Just because everyone knows about it as you say, doesn't mean it isn't worth speaking about. I think it is a fitting tribute for a man of such stature to be spoken of in so many forums and between so many people.

It is also a fitting tribute for humanity in general that people such as we, getting together on such a place as here, and talking about things as trivial as people that we did not know, and how they made us feel good about living.

Not as well said as one might think. We get constant reports of how many people have died due to wars and terror attacks around the world, but there is not enough time in a 24 hour day to pay tribute in the same way that we might someone that everyone all knows.

Every death has a special meaning and purpose for our history, however we cannot just spend our entire lives trying to figure out all of them and focusing on how sad all of that is. Concentrating on just a few and the impact of death in general is more constructive, and helps us to remember to enjoy our lives and live them without hate or fear.

Trying to lead us to think that we might be in wrong thought because we happen to concentrate on Mr. Irwin because he is famous instead of every single person that dies period is just a nice way of trying to tell people that you are better than them because you don't.

I am sure we all here know there are wars, people die in them, and starvation still exists in this world. Expressing loss of the death of Mr. Irwin doesn't change this, or say anything about who any of us really are. It only says that we are capable of feeling normal human reactions and emotions. I think that's a good sign, not a bad one.

Ciao

If there is any truth to this hypothesis, there's no WONDER Steve got nailed!
You make a very interesting point about the electricity - I didn't even think of that. There are probably many water-based animals that would carry this concern. Sure, the fact that he got stabbed in the heart and died is a fluke, but the idea of a man doing what he was doing being stabbed at all is completely plausible and perhaps even probable. Just think, if this stab wound had been a few inches away, it would have been yet another comical injury sustained that wacky ol' Crocodile Hunter. Add it to all the snake bites, tail whips and other funny boo-boos he got over the years. Since it killed him, it becomes sad and tragic?

FYI, Dave, Fox News also has a website, where you can read the news if you choose, from which I pulled the quote earlier, hence Frank's comment about reading their version. And no, it doesn't upset me that you spelled my name wrong.

Let's see since it was brought up:

Terri Irwin, who happens to be Steve Irwin's wife (now widow) is from Eugene, Oregon. When I worked for Regal Cinemas, I travelled to that very town to help with the acquistion of Act III Theatres (the Cinemaworld 8). While there I happened to eat a wonderful restaurant owned by a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Baines. They happen to be Terri's parents. Not only were they nice people, but the food at thier restaurant was awesome (and their employees were extremely helpful and courteous). While I have never met Mr. Steve Irwin. I have actually met people who know him very well.

Being that Steve's (may I call him that?) wife is from Eugene, this story has made the front page of the local paper here two days in a row. I suspect it would have anyway even if she weren't from Eugene.

Why does the death of a Steve Irwin resonate with people? Maybe it's because he lived larger-than-life and died doing what he loved. Most of us have a mundane job and won't accomplish anything of any real substance in our lives. Steve Irwin did.

As for "attention whores", is Jerry Lewis an attention whore for doing the Labor Day telethon every year for several decades now? I mean, if people have to be reminded of the horror of muscular dystrophy to shame them into donating money to help the victims, that's very sad. Isn't it? [Roll Eyes]

Dennis: Do you remember the name of the restaurant? (Cinema World 8 is being shut down later this year too. [Frown] )

Thats a good point. I think celebs use what they have in order to do some good or get a message out. If they have to act foolish or do something dangerous so people notice their cause, well, then you have to do what you have to do. I can't imagine Steve Irwin with a chalkboard and overhead projector pointing out and describing animal parts and behaviors. It would be like Evel Kneivel describing a jump instead of doing..

Steve was my uncle, I hope you all feel better about yourselves by acting too tough to care about someone dying, just because you didnt know him personally. Ooh..look at me, I'm tough on a forum! I wanna be entertained! I dont care by who, if they die, I'll just change the channel!! I need attention, and this should help me get it! Obviously he wasnt my uncle, but seeing as how this is a forum used and read worldwide, what makes you think that someone possibly related to him will never read this, and take those comments to heart? They have theaters and theater employees in australia right? You people entertain me though, dont go dying on me now.

Been a while since I've been reading this thread, so bear with me as I catch up.

Actually, this point brings up a more simple nagging issue:

If anyone has a problem with "attention whores" then what the hell are they doing frequenting a web site that deals with movies, which by nature are cast with lots and lots and lots of damned attention whores (actors)??????
[Confused]

quote: Chad Souder
I was trying to bash those that responded to his death with sadness or surprise.
So, Chad, you're basically saying that you are personally "bashing" Film-Tech members who think it's at least a bit sad that Steve Irwin died in that tragic accident?

I think the incident was pretty damned sad. So you're bashing me? Please forgive the natural urge to respond by saying "fuck you."

Geez, some tact would be at least a bit appropriate. I though I would get into some trouble for my "watch me stick me thumb in this sting ray's ass" comment. But that's pretty mild by comparison.

quote: Chad Souder
That's funny, but no. I don't cry when people I don't know die.
quote: Chad Souder
I pay almost $100 per month for my cable so that I can be entertained. I could give a crap about the personal lives of the people doing the entertaining any more than I expect them to care about my personal life as a viewer.
Those two comments are really pretty damned callous in the context of this thread. Chad, I immediately imagine a situation where a TV news helicopter videotapes you getting involved in a fiery inferno of a multiple vehicle car accident. I imagine lots of fat, disgusting putrified examples of humanity laughing through chomps of their popcorn as they unflinchingly watch "people they don't know" die on live TV all for their entertainment.

Death is a pretty damned real thing.

Lots of people are very flippant about death, usually when they have never seen it for themselves in real life.

16 years ago, back in 1990, I saw some Wall Street investment broker get hit and killed by a van right in front of my eyes. I never knew that guy personally. But I swear to God the experience of seeing that in real life still haunts me in vivid detail to this very day. That guy walked right by me on the Staten Island S2 bus, out the front door and then out into Bay Street where he was struck and killed by a white van passing alongside the bus.

With that, pardon me if I have a bit of a serious attitude about death. Steve Irwin, "attention whore" or not, was a real human being. And he died FOR REAL in a very tragic accident.

Those who just want to take the opportunity to type out some flames at the expense of the dead guy seriously need to STFU.

I am surprised I have to explain this to you. If you work in entertainment technology, you don't have to identify with the content in order to do your job well. In fact, content plays no role at all. It certainly does help if you have a feeling for content *quality* such as good photography and sound because then you can judge the performance of a given piece of entertainment equipment from esthetic as well as from technical points of view, and it does help you to finetune stuff.
But it certainly doesn't matter at all if you like the content and the actors or not. Do you think you have to like the movie that is going to be shown next when you repair a projector?

In fact, look at the movie review section in this forum. I would say a majority of reviews are fairly negative to extremely negative because most people who post there simply don't like most of the movies they see and the actors that are in it.
Does that mean that the same people can't be good projectionists and cinema technicians?
Are you saying that Brad is not a good technician because he hates the vast majority of movies he reviews?

In this particular case, I just didn't like the way he messed around with animals and kept repeating ad nauseam just how dangerous they are (on a replay of a Larry King appearance I watched yesterday, he kept repeating that several times over just to make sure veryone really got the message). The shows were about him, not about animals. The way he handled animals reminded me of the times when bears were made to bycicle in circuses and other other nasty, abusing stuff they used to do with them.
Animals have teeth and stings and claws for a reason. When they feel threatened, they bite, scratch, sting. Just like when you see a nasty animals runnig up to you, you step on it (or run away, depending on the size).
A real animal expert should know that and respect it. If he doesn't he is inviting disaster.
Kind of like someone playing Russian Roulette on TV. Would you be heartbroken about people who blow their brains out on "The Deer Hunter TV Show"?

quote:
Ooh..look at me, I'm tough on a forum! I wanna be entertained! I dont care by who, if they die, I'll just change the channel!!
You put that very well. That is exactly what you are doing every day. Every single day you see a lot people die or hear about them dying on TV, from accidents, plane crashes, being swept away by tsunamis and floods, buried by erupting volcanoes, being blown up by suicide bombers, stepping on landmines, being killed in combat or by just happening to be in the way of combat etcetcetc.
Do you spend hours weeping in front of the TV every day?
No.
You just change the channel.

quote: Mark J. Marshall
Ugh. Kind of like Chuck Yeager dying in a bicycle wreck.
Actually, Yuri Gagarin, who was 10 times the pioneer that Yeager was, died in a plane crash on a routine training flight. I wonder how many people were absolutely heartbroken about that, especially here.
