I have no clue how old the glass itself is. Can glass just do this on its own for no reason? The hole is much bigger now than in the picture and I only snapped this about 20 minutes ago. Pieces are falling off rapidly. I really wish there was a cut up dead bird at the bottom of the door. Did you have an extremely cold night followed by a much warmer day? If the sun shines on that window in the morning, it could make it break. That happened to my sister -- they have a similar door, but the glass is two panes sandwiched around a plastic inner layer, so only one side shattered. If you have a road nearby, maybe a car kicked up a rock. My guess is someone fell/pushed against it because the point of impact appears to be waist high. This is caused when the sheet of glass is cooled too quickly at the factory and the stress remains until something sets of a chain reaction. Just the vibration of the wind could have caused the reaction to start. The frame also adds to the stress on the glass. The rear window of my car once "blew out" while it was parked in the shade. No apparent reason except the poor annealing of the glass in manufacturing. Made a real mess, too! Boiled kettle, put ground coffee in cafetiere, poured the water in, stirred it, and while I was waiting for it to brew the glass jug just spontaneously shattered and disintegrated. Nothing knocked it or hit it or anything (I was on the other side of the room at the time) - it just blew up while sitting on the worktop. Presumably it must have been the thermal stress on the thin glass caused by going from room temperature to boiling temperature in a second or two that did it. The pigf****r managed to distribute about 67 million microscopic shards of glass all over the staff kitchen (not to mention the coffee). Oh well ... I spent a fun packed half-hour cleaning it up, and Tesco is now £3.99 richer.
