I've seen that happen. Car was parked outside overnight in very cold weather, and the rear window completely shattered.

I had a similar thing happen to me. At 1st I thought it was one of these zombies trying to get at me, but then I saw that my cordless electric drill fell off a ladder and broke a newly installed double-pane sliding glass door panel. It cost $600 to replace. ouch!

Most building codes require tempered glass for those doors and when they are stuck/break, for safety, they break into thousands of small non-sharp harmless pieces as that pic shows.

It's very rare that anything but a hard rap/flying stone/etc would break those tough widows...I doubt that they would fail on their own or from temp changes.

As far as car windows: The only time I've seen those fail is with a big hatchback window (like a mid 80's Z-28) that was dark-tinted and left in the hot sun. Then was sprayed with cold water at a car wash.

When we bought our current home in 1985, I was installing those "pin" type security locks in our tempered sliding glass patio doors. I drilled the hole and just knicked the corner of the glass in the frame -- within seconds, the window shattered into thousands of tiny pieces. [Eek!]

And here's the sliding glass patio doors at my Dad's house... still with a BB hole that us kids shot in it over 30 years ago!

That reminds me of something I used to do at a wrecking yard I worked at in high school.

If you shatter the porcelain on a spark plug insulator and throw one of the tiny pieces really hard at a tempered car window, it will crack into a million pieces.

We had a great time one day doing this to cars before they went into the crusher.

Has anyone else ever seen this? The piece of porcelain only needs to be the size of BB, but will completely shatter the window if you throw it hard enough. The window will normally stay in place, until you touch it and then it falls apart. [evil]
