As far as I know, hybrid cars aren't really cost-effective yet. They cost more to buy and get roughly twice the gas mileage as "normal" cars, but for the typical user who might drive 10-15,000 miles per year, the fuel savings don't pay for the extra purchase cost over the first 100k miles.
Also, since they're so new, hybrid maintenance costs are an unknown. Eventually, the batteries will need to be replaced, which is an expensive procedure (and used lead-acid batteries need to be disposed of as hazardous waste). The gasoline engines get less wear than on a standard gasoline-only car, but other aspects of the vehicle are more complex and may require more attention.
For the most part, anyone who thinks that buyinga hybrid car (as opposed to a standard-size sedan equivalent) will save money isn't likely to see this actually happen with the current generation of cars.
I'm not in the market for a car (and, hopefully, won't be for several years...and, then, it will still be a used car), but I'd love to be proven wrong on this.
