Paul's picture left out one rather important detail - for the projectionists at any case! Those 70mm shows came in just after our elevator went out...

About half of those reels made it up there by Yours Truly's elbow grease (many thanks to Oliver the manager for helping me, and lugging the others). Yup - Jimmy is in the foreground and Larry is in the background. T.E. Lawrence was a notorious fitness freak, and it seems that he's imposing it on us from beyond the grave! But at any rate, hauling those movies was probably easier than hauling Kim Novak out of San Francisco Bay.
Sorry I missed you on Friday, Paul (I'm a Seventh-day Adventist and therefore don't work Friday evenings). My colleagues who ran Larry both at the Gypo and the Aero report that it looked great, though. I ran West Side Story at the Aero last night and it was fantastic - a very clean print (a little dirt from plattering at the starts and ends, but otherwise mint), razor sharp, the DTS with five stage channels sounded great (the noise reduction wasn't too aggressive, and so it really did evoke mag sound) and we had an almost sellout crowd.
Of course the elevator was fixed just after we got the films up the stairs.
Martin - shipping 70mm isn't too big an expense for us, because one of our colleagues goes and gets the prints from local depots in a van. We're very lucky in that both our (the American Cinematheque's) theatres are located pretty close to where many 70mm prints are kept (both those of the studios and some of the big non-profit archives), and so we don't have that economic hurdle to get over in order to play 70mm.
