Although I'm not a Ford Fan but I will say when choosing a replacement oil Filter I would take a MOTORCRAFT OIL FILTER over a FRAM(unless it's their HP Series) any day of the week. Years ago. I got a Fram,Motorcraft,Wix,Hastings,purolater,Delco-Remy and a couple other less popular names. I sawed the filters length wise to compare their Filtering Properties. FRAM was actually the worst. The 2 best for finest Micron Filtering were the HASTINGS and the MOTORCRAFT. I chose the HASTINGS at that time simply because they use to Tack weld a 7/8" Nut on the Bottom of the Filter for easy Take off with a Ratchet & Socket but I would have also used the MOTORCRAFT in a Pinch.
Don't fudge on an Oil Filter, This is what keeps Fine metallic particles,Dirt, etc. from circulating through your oiling system and causing Bearing Damage and other related Damage...Spend the Extra buck or 2...

That's funny, I've been in the auto parts biz for over 30 years and you would think we'd have heard from somewhere that synthetic oil is a big scam and isn't really necessary. But I have never heard that from anyone in my whole life until you, Steve. We deal with at least two dozen mechanics around here -- old guys and young guys, hobbyists and professionals -- all of them use synthetic when it's called for and they gripe about the cost of it, but they use it.
If you think the auto parts stores are in on the "scam," think again because if people are convinced they can go 50k or whatever miles between oil changes, they're going to buy less oil from us, not more. And the markup on synthetic is no better than it is on regular oil. Since it's always going on sale, we're lucky to get 10% out of any of the stuff on the average.
I have a hard time believing that the oil industry can afford to "pay off" all the auto manufacturers and related companies, not to mention the parts retailers and outfits like Consumer Reports, Car & Driver, Hot Rod, etc., all of whom say that you should use the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer and if you don't, it's at your own risk.
If you drive a car 15,000 miles a year, you would drive 100,000 miles in about 6 1/2 years. If you change the oil every 7,000, that's about 14 oil changes. If synthetic costs $3 a quart more than regular oil and you use 5 quarts in a change, that's $210 more that you've spent in those miles, or $32 a year. It's not exactly major bucks.

Funny is that we all tug and pull on synth oils ( AMSOIL is the one that really comes up to mind - with all of the testimonies on how great this oil, and AMSOIL tranny fluid/gear oil/filter are) is, but it comes down that the filter still needs to be changed out, at least 5K miles.
Thing with synth oils is that the molecules are the same size, thus gives more durability and doesn't evaporate as with dino oils where their molecules are of different sizes, which allows breakdown and evaporation.
Another oil that has that lot of hype, but doesn't impress me is that Royal Purple stuff. Now, heard of Brad Penn oils due to the high content of zinc in that product for performance applications.
For oil, either dino or synth, is still going to get particles in suspension that needs to be filter out.
Course, I'm running a turbo, thus I do use Mobil 1 10w/30 synth for that light performance application, but do agree: keep the oil/filter changed every 3K/3months and no motor issues will surface.
And on the topic of FRAM: I used to run FRAM filters on vehicles from new to motors went well over 100K miles and never had problems.I used to use cheap CHECKER Flag oil (I'd buy that stuff by the case at all times) with the FRAM filters for couldn't see shoving in more expensive oils, but as long as the oil came out of the pan between a three to four month interval.
Now, I use NAPA (built by WIX) for the turbo and used factory issued filters for the other vehicle due to the warranty coverage.
Course, once again, I do the 3K rule, for when that oil gets worn out, one can tell that the motor is struggling a bit with performance. When the change is done, one can feel the lost HP come back to being used once again.
