I emphatically disagree. I've seen film in cans that had come unwound, wrapped around ther reels, tnagled in unsecured ends from other reels in the container, past the leader, into the picture, crease, scratched etc.
And whether it's one reelers or prints in cans, on those occasions when the shipping container comes open, if the ends aren't secured, what gets stuffed back in is a horrible, wadded mess.
Tape the ends at least, please, but I agree that the reel bands are the best.
