Once again, you are insinuating that no union running the festival means that the prints will automatically be trashed ...

In my experience, that has happened. I do not think that I am wrong in stating that. You are going to have more problems with unqualified operators. We have been through this already. Why do you think that when we have festivals here in NYC, they want union operators to run them. [thumbsup] What does that tell you? I'm tired of going over the same things here over and over.

unqualified operators
To me, from the way I am taking it, is you are saying that anyone here on Film-Tech that is non-union is automatically not a qualified operator. Thats what it sounds like to me.

Hopefully the filmmakers care enough about their prints to step in and do something
They just hope that every house in the world would go DLP digital, but we know that isn't feasible, in solving this problem. Yet the premieres are probably run by professional booth personnel.

They probably know about these presentation problems, yet they know that the average individual STILL loves to go out for a movie, instead staying home and watching their home theatres or TV.

And as one mentions: it's all about the money and nothing else matters.

Kinda like we're batting our heads against a brick wall at times, or fighting a uphill current in our small boats as well.

By the late 1970's, the IA (at least here in Northern NJ) was arrogant, somewhat corrupt, and rife with nepotism, while excluding talented individuals who wanted to be projectionst but did not have the right connections or were not willing to pay large bribes to get in.
Wow.. That sounds just like the kind of organization I want in my building...

Richard, in 10 years in the business, I have never scratched a print.. Nor have I ever had a union card. Frankly, I am just as qualified as you are.

People, please word your posts a little more carefully on the union / non-union issue.

Facts:
There are great union operators.
There are lousy union operators.
There are great non-union operators.
There are lousy non-union operators.
There are great manager/operators.
There are lousy manager/operators.

If you want to make a comment, please bear these basic facts in mind. Yes on average you've got a better chance of getting a good presentation out of a union operator than a manager/operator, that's just a fact, but by no means should anyone be making blanket statements that one is definitely better or worse than another. There are exceptions to everything in life, and yes that does include the possibility that some 16 year old kid from the popcorn stand could be doing a better job than some 70 year old guy with 50 years of experience. [Eek!]

That also goes for this ridiculousness of saying that all unions are bad, and then of course citing that damn Chicago local.

Please guys, word your posts clearly and carefully so we can avoid more of this confusion. [thumbsup]

Thank you Brad.

I have tried to stay clear of the Union issue even though some of us are proud to have been part of a craft that was once appreciated.

That being said, I am beginning to get rather annoyed with a certain poster from Atlanta.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion (and to have that opinion (challenged) but at his tender age and consequent experience, I would advise offering my opinions with a little more humility, particularly in light of the absurd notion about union operators conspiring to indirectly cause print damage at the Uptown.

Was this member abused by a union organizer at an early age? One has to wonder about the basis for his blind distaste of unions?

To be specific, I have no problem with non union operators. I have no problem with operators that are managers. But when you start using managers that are not projectionists, in a booth that always had a union operator That I have a problem with. Clear enough?
Jeremy, You are right. It does sound like I am implying that, but that is not the way I meant it. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Now ... why do we have to get personal? Perhaps you should refer to the posting rules ...

That being said ... I love how you speak so freely about my "inexperience." I happen to be the area manager for my chain.

If you noticed ... I admitted that my question was unfounded once I had an answer for it ...

Oh PLEEZE Mike.... if you are an area manager with ANY experience at all you would have already kown what Brad pointed out above... But I will refresh your memory.

Facts:
There are great union operators.
There are lousy union operators.
There are great non-union operators.
There are lousy non-union operators.
There are great manager/operators.
There are lousy manager/operators.

I think we should also add to that...

There are Good Area Managers
There are Bad Area Managers

Mike, Which one do you fit?

Mark @ CLACO

Never have I said that "all union operators are bad." Just simply defended manager/operators from bashing from the union guys, and criticized some union leadership tactics based on FIRST-HAND experience with the chemical attacks.

Mike,

I apologize for being personal while trying to be satirical.

However, you seem to have a knee jerk reaction to anything union.

Unions were formed for a reason, not because they were Commies.

Whether they still have a place in today's society can be debated.

May I inquire what chain you work for?
