I have seen one of the BL&S setups and it does have a modified dual arm fail-safe. The Ground rollers and fanged ball bearings used in cue detection removed. there is also a tension fail-safe included for the platter. I was getting some of the focus drift in the center as well.

Question for those who are showing this: are you charging normal admission prices, or a higher-than-normal "roadshow" price?

It never would have occurred to me that ticket prices might be higher for H8 than for a regular first-run title, but I saw an article today that suggested that some theatres would be charging a premium for it.

Also, for once, we have a positive article in the Washington Post about this release as a noble effort to save cinema by differentiating it from television. Much as the industry did in the 1950s.

Anybody been to the Landmark in West LA? Are any of the screens big enough to do this justice? Their largest room seats 300. Note: art house, not a road show venue.

Was informed today that the premiere will be at the Cinerama Dome on Monday (next week), here in L.A. There may be a New York premiere as well, but I didn't get any info on that.

Other info: the print (for reel-to-reel houses) is on 5 "double" reels. Heavy!

The overture is a total of about 3' 11", more or less. There is a title ("Overture") in the picture -- which might not have been needed in the days of yore! -- that shows until 2' 50". Then that word fades out and the music continues for approx. another 20 seconds.

The intermission is at the end of "reel #3", and all the black film is on there at the end of that reel. Can't explain why, but there it is. The entr'acte (intro) music (45 seconds), to start the second half, is at the head of "reel #4".

Why would it be needed today? That's just terrible. I can understand why they put that on DVDs, otherwise viewers will think there's something wrong when there's music but no picture. But in a theatre, I would cringe at the sight.

I hope at least theatres with curtains will have the sense to keep the dowser closed during the overture, and wait to open the curtains until the studio logo comes up. And of course, any theatre used for a roadshow presentation will have curtains, right? No?

Victor Borge had it right: "First, you hear the overture. And when the 'ture is over the curtain rises."

The Landmark showed the Master in 70mm.
The Master was also a 1.85:1 aspect ratio (not even god knows why) so it didn't look half bad in the multiplex venues. I suspect since The Landmark doesn't have movable top and bottom masking they will run into the same issue a lot of these venues are going to have with not being able to avoid letterboxing the image. It's possible they have added special masking to accommodate this but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

You got that right. While the idea may seem like a good one...that means that one is expected to lift the equivalent of FIVE 35mm reels at a time...over their head! If you can make one good changeover, you can make more good ones...keep them on separate reels!

For New York City...

Anyone here know if H8FULL at Lincoln Square is going to be in the big "non-imax" auditorium, the one that used to have 5/70 in it's pre-digital life? If so, Lincoln Square will be the place to see it.

Add the Tower theatre in Sacramento to the list.(birth place of Tower Records in the back of Tower drugs located in the side of the building).

They sent some test footage on a mini version of what they are sending the platter version on. Very hard to get the flanges off. It is going to be a big problem with the full print. Sending the print this way may lead to a lot of problems.

Cinemark is not letting any outside techs access to there theatres until Dec 22. Can not go in and even do a site check.

MR Quentin on these 70mm roadshow film reels needs to put in red or blue curtains over the overture, then have them open on the main title. Same with the intermission as they have put in 12 minutes of black film stock (way to short) is another place to bring the fake curtains but taken from real curtains and have them open on the second part of the roadshow film. Many theatres have no curtains these days or the cinemas that still have them they don't work. It's probably to late to do this but I hope Quentin reads this form and on his next 70mm film try something like this and not just put the title OVERTURE up on the screen with the stereo surround pre show music playing. In the 50's & 60's when all the 70mm roadshow films played most of these deluxe theatres had curtains that stayed closed as the pre show overture music played behind the curtains. The lights dimmed and the curtains opened to a large semi curved screen. Quentin bring back some showmanship, If you want to do 70mm roadshow again for a new generation to enjoy. Don't just leave a sign on the screen or black leader on a boring white screen were curtains need to be.

Another complainer - the list is apparently endless! - give Taratino a break, and enjoy the film and the efforts put into it.

Thomas I was not complaining but trying to make a suggestion for future films Quentin may do in 70mm. As my friend 'Bill' who e mailed me a few minutes ago said "Everybody talks about the 70mm format for H8, but nobody is talking about the quality of the movie. good or bad? I don't care how big or loud the picture is, If the movie stinks that's the end period. The Weinstein Company is in a bad financial state. This picture, If it does not do well will sink the entire company and put any changes of future 70mm presentations in the trash can!"
