Most of the issues seemed so easy to fix. I'm absolutely shocked about the out of sync audio issue. That's such an easy fix, it just shows you whoever set up the projectors, didn't really bother to make sure they worked!!! Even a film loop with audio would have sufficed to make sure it worked. Some of the other errors were just flat-out ridiculous and things that are not format specific. I was really scared the roadshow would be a problem and it looks like I was right. I bet most theaters switch to DCP this coming week since it goes wide in digital. Of course, Arclight Hollywood, Sherman Oaks and LaJolla have excellent reviews, not a single hitch. I bet they don't even have the digital projector running, no need to! Seriously, how many idiots don't know how to tell the right side of 70mm? Maybe each of those locations need to put tape on the leader saying "this side out dumbfuck" or something.... this shows either lack of training or worse, the old multiplex method of projection...let's have one qualified guy try to teach the popcorn jockeys how to do it... 2: I saw a few episodes of brainwraps and at least one thrown print... 3: The out of sync issues, also unacceptable IMHO. That shows lack of care in threading to maintain proper loop sizes. See #1 above. 4: Some sound dropouts...either bad printing, or more likely when the DTS readers were set up they were not checked for proper alignment and LED level... 5: At least one rectifier ("power supply") failure... I hope BLS wasn't sending out any of the horrid old style black Strong switchers.. (and as a point of curiosity, were any spares available to possibly be left at some locations?) 6: AFI got, as expected, a near perfect review, except for a slight curtain squeak..you'd better jump on that Steve Guttag. Also of note that the Del Amo Torrance comments said QT was at a screening with some tech issues...as someone who had worked with QT I have to call BS on that...either the guy was lying about the issues, or more likely lying about QT being there....as QT would have been screaming at the theatre manager and projectionist for the issues (if he really was there). Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 12-26-2015 02:14 PM                     Tony, The curtain was serviced specifically for this show and is slated to be replaced in 2016 (as well as the track)...so yeah...the AFI is "on that." And, for them to "hear a squeak" they would have had to be in the front part of the theatre...it wasn't loud (not as loud as most carriers seems to be as they clack together...which doesn't happen at the AFI). The Silver was built to THX standards so at NC30 or lower...you will hear EVERYTHING. I'm not too worried about the show there. I went to the Thursday 9:45 and it was near perfect. Projectionist was very attentive and was constantly checking film path with flashlight. It ran fine all 4 shows yesterday and nothing was touched. The offset on the XD20 had to be moved by 10 frames on the fly. After the show the XD20 was power cycled and our original offset was back to be correct. Terrific presentation of course, but it's painful to see such a gorgeous movie designed for a giant screen play in these multiplex houses. Event the larger ETX, XD, etc. just wouldn't do it justice. A room designed for scope films is really what is needed. Despite being so wide, the screen area just felt so small in such a space. Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 12-27-2015 12:25 AM                     I just got back home from watching the 7:00pm show at AMC Quail Springs Mall 24 in Oklahoma City. Treacherous drive on I-44 both ways; I'm just thankful the snow and ice is still out to the West as I write this. Anyway, presentation quality at this AMC site was pretty good apart from some obvious annoyances I kind of expected. There were no audio problems at all; the sound quality was actually pretty good and they had the sound turned up enough so it had some kick to it. The gun shots and exploding human tissue had some good punctuation. There were no sync issues. No "overture" card threaded backward either. The movie was stuck in auditorium #12, which probably didn't seat more than 250 people. AMC should have had this in a much bigger auditorium. Every show has been selling out. I arrived at the theater over an hour early. It's a good thing I did because there was already a line outside the auditorium! I expected a common width screen and that's what it had. I sat closer than usual, knowing the movie would be seriously letter-boxed (and smaller) on this flat ratio screen. They had the movie framed toward the bottom of the screen. I don't think they had the film gate and aperture plate very well set up on this projector because the bottom edge of the frame was fairly soft. With a proper common height screen and proper masking all of that would have been hidden from view. The film print was still in pretty good condition. There was one issue: during the Overture card I could see a thin, black vertical scratch on the far right end of the frame. Thankfully it disappeared maybe a minute or two after the overture finished. The rest of the movie had just a tiny bit of debris here and there. Focus was decent, but not the best I've seen from real 70mm. I wonder if some of that softness was coming from those vintage 1.25x anamorphic lenses used to photograph the movie. The theater staff wasn't very on the ball about the movie's printed roadshow program. They had them stashed back at guest services. They should have been handing out these things at the entrance into the theater. A bunch of people didn't even know about them. Pretty good movie though. Better than I expected actually. I was worried this was going to be a very long, very boring Deathproof: Part 2. One thing I have to watch out for is that the framing really needs to be precise or I'll see negative splices on screen. BLSI sent out a test reel of actual H-F-8 footage, and it took several run-throughs of that, (and a steady hand), but I've finally found the 'sweet spot' for the framing knob. Tony- - In regards to your question about spare rectifers- - BLSI did send out some spare parts kits, but to the best of my knowledge, spare rectifiers (power supplies) weren't included. My booth and some others I've seen pictures of, all have CHRISTIE consoles. I walked around the other 8 booths in the multiplex I'm at and there are several unused, consoles that have been pushed into corners collecting dust. I suppose in a catastrophic rectifier failure, parts, or the entire power supply, could be cannabilized from one of them. Also, I'm not sure that any "pocorn jockys" are actually running these shows. Every venue I'm aware of has brought in a dedicated projectionist. (but from some of the problem reports I've seen, some guys are apparently more dedicated than others!) One thing I think I've finally got the theater staff trained to realize, is that the auditorium lights are SUPPOSED to be 'on' (half level) during the OVERTURE. (Or ERUTREVO, if you've threaded incorrectly) For the first couple of shows, they'd keep yelling "THE LIGHTS ARE STILL ON" over the radio, and once even sent a kid upstairs to tell me to turn them off. Remember the trick is to throw the anamorphic WAY out of focus, use the focus knob to get the horizontal lines as sharp as they can get, then without touching the focus knob again, adjust the astigmatism on the anamorphic until the vertical lines are sharp. quote: Jim Cassedy Sound Sync: Haven't run into this during screenings so far. I saw a safety ring in a picture from one of his installs and pointed it out to him. In the photo i received it appears to be towards the credit section, I'm assuming they fixed it but haven't heard yet.  |  IP: Logged
