Sam spent a lot of time getting the aperture plate & astigmatism adjusted correctly, and also did a complete EQ of the auditorium. Stephan did an unbelievable job timing the platters. This reddit thread about the Southdale engagement mentions that the print was already very scratched at the very first preview screening on 12/24. Apparently all of the opening weekend shows sold out. It's a toss up for me to see it there or at the Grand Lake. They wanted the room tuned and I traded it if they would put up some temp masking. Very nice crew there. Best overall of the ones I did is the Kabuki. Best light, sharpest picture. Grand Lake is very good too on light level but the top masking looks a tiny bit rough due to a beam blocking the top edge of the picture. They did add bottom masking so you have three perfect edges. I just could not convince Stephan Shelley to climb up to the top of the screen and lower it somehow. LOL I would check Tower to make sure is being presented in 70mm when you get ready to go or check back with me. There is a possibility this will be shown at Grand Lake #1 or 4 in the next few weeks as business dictates.  |  IP: Logged David J Hilsgen Expert Film Handler Posts: 192 From: SAUK RAPIDS,MN . Also, I'm making plans to see it this week in Denver. From the reports, it sounds like the Continental edges out the Promenade, both on screen size and projection issues. Joe, have you seen it yet? It's large in context as the house is wide and about 300 seats.  |  IP: Logged Tom Hayes Film Handler Posts: 21 From: San Diego, CA, USA Registered: Aug 2006 posted 12-28-2015 11:46 AM                     I'd like to ask this question here: Is QT's desire to present a film this way going to damage it for the vast majority of people who see it? 2.76:1 means that at most of the locations showing it in 70MM the actual image will be smaller than the screen they have installed. It also means that watching it in a "normal" theater will have a much smaller image than could have been presented. And watching it on a modern 4k or HD TV (say a Bluray) has even more of an issue. (And on a 4:3 tablet, like an iPad will have almost 50% of the screen be blank.) Also it seems the possible technical issues that are being introduced make it a much riskier film to see in the theater, and at more than 3 hours long that doesn't seem like much fun. My understanding is that its basically 8 (or more) people inside of a room talking at each other. This just seems overly self-indulgent to me. (And I already bought tickets for the 31st in La Jolla so he's got my money already - I'm I part of the problem?) We are having one platter that 'hunts' taking up at about the 2 hour mark. Takes up,but makes the operators nervous. BL&S wants them timed to 30rpm@100%. Have to go in early. Also have to find my tach, haven't needed it in over 3 years. I don't think so. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive along with shows selling out at many of the locations. I do, however, think that Quentin dropped the ball going with Ultra Panavision for this particular movie. Using the 2.20 ratio would have resulted in far superior presentation at the majority of venues unable to move their masking and also not having to shrink the image would have made it more "epic" for a lot of people expecting to be blown away by a super-huge image on the screen. I was fortunate enough to see it on a screen wide enough to show it properly and they also had it masked properly all around the image and had a curtain covering the screen before the overture as well. It felt like a real roadshow. Even though I would have still liked the movie and enjoyed the quality of the image that 70mm provides, I doubt the experience would have been nearly as great if I had seen it on a medium/small sized multiplex screen. So far everything seems to be going a lot more smoothly than many of us predicted (which is great news) so I think the future of more 70mm releases will hinge on how much money this movie makes. I understand TWC owns all of the equipment that BL&S installed so I'm not sure how everything would work if another studio wanted to leave that stuff in place to show an upcoming movie on 70mm at the same venues. Anyone know what the current plan is for the equipment? Thanks for your work on getting the other theatres like the Tower up and going. Does the Tower in Sacramento still have It's D-150 curved screen up in the large downstairs part, and is It still semi curved? I'm in Pittsburg. Solid installation, steady picture, platter is smooth. Image is properly masked...good management here wanting the best presentation possible. It's on a smaller screen though. Just for laughs, looked out the next porthole after watching this...what a difference from DCP...of course I knew it would but it's so extremely better in 70!  |  IP: Logged Sam D. Did not do any of the Cinemark as they went in last and I was busy with others. There's no curved screen at Tower. When it was tri plexed the wall was right at the bottom of the loge section and the new screen above that. Phil I do the timing with a sweep second hand watch and a piece of tape on the platter and count turns over 15 or 30 seconds, or a full minute if you don't get bored easily.  |  IP: Logged
