I ruled processor scratching out when writing that reply above, because all the prints are being checked and assembled by the team in Valencia before being shipped to theaters. In the process of transferring the prints from the cores and boxes on which I understand they're leaving FotoKem, to the reels and cases on which they're being shipped onwards to theaters, surely the technician doing this would have noticed if they arrived "virgin" from the lab already scratched?
The conclusion I jumped to is that because this appears to be a changeover-configured print, it was one that was used in one or more of the pre-release preview shows, and that's where the accident happened.
In any case, I imagine that Chapin's team will want to establish exactly where and how that scratching happened, for obvious reasons.
quote: Bil Brandenstein suppose if I want to see pretty pictures in 70mm, I'm going to need to head down to the Imax theater at California Science Center, because now I'm certain that H8ful is a movie I have no interest in seeing.
I'm kinda ambivalent about Tarantino. He's not a minor talent, but neither is he a Welles or a Bergman. A co-worker watched this thing at one of our preview screenings, and concluded that the story and acting were solid achievements, but what Tarantino really needed was a Thalberg-style producer breathing down his neck and pruning the show down to 90 minutes or so. Hitchcock tried a similar style and technological gimmick with Rope, but knew his audience's limit and kept it down to five reels.
