Yes, I turned the feature off (it also has several different levels low, medium and high). When its off, it looks like any other LCD Panel TV, just with excellent black levels.

Frank...try looking at the set with a checker-board pattern...most contrast ratio figures are beyond bogus and only tell a full on versus full off. Having to put up both black and white at the same time prevents modulating the light as well and shows the true contrast of the set.

They get a better contrast ration because of their high gloss screen (so I'm told). 25000:1 seems a bit rediculous, but then if you look at the set, you might nod your heard in agreement that it does deliver a fantastic contrast rate.

Back to Blu-Ray...After buying my BD-P1400, I heard that it is only profile 1.0. All Blu-Ray decks released after 10/31/07 are supposed to be Profile 1.1. Firmware cannot update this, as it calls for a second video decoder in the deck. There was also talk about the new Profile 1.1 discs not playing well, or at all, in Profile 1.0 machines. Even worse yet is the fact that Profile 2.0 is supposed to be the final standard for Blu-Ray. So why goto Profile 1.1? Now I have to take my deck back and wait for the Duo deck that Samsung is coming out with in early/mid December. It will be Profile 1.1 compatible, only after a firmware update due out at the end of January.

This is not good strategy for Blu-Ray...I was a believer until I read this mess. Now I'm getting mad. I'd return the deck and just wait, but I have amassed a small amount of movies already. [thumbsdown]

Anybody seen the LG Super-Blu player? It handles both Blu-Ray and HD disks. Is that the first player that handles both?

Where did you get this info? In order for a Blu-Ray player to be Profile 1.1 compliant, it must have a 2nd video decoder. My info says that the new combo player from Samsung will be Samsungs first 1.1 player.

Yes, but would you trust anything from a company whose initials stand for Low Grade? It is the first player and I think there is another by Samsung. Wait until Japanese companies start making them if you don't like crap.

Franky Goes to Hollywood, the 1.1 is probably just a bug fix.

I think the LG Super-Blu player was the first "universal" or "hybrid" dual format HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. Being first is not necessarily best. That player had a $1000+ price tag. And it doesn't support all the features of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, such as the "profile 1.1 disc" thing previously mentioned.

Samsung's UP-5000 looks as though it will be the first decent dual format HD-disc player. I am absolutely certain ever better and less expensive dual format players will soon follow.

Profile 1.1 is a player standard set by Blu-Ray. All new players introduced after 10/31/07 must be Profile 1.1. Firmware will not update a player to Profile 1.1 unless it has the necessary hardware already installed. This means, specifically, a 2nd video decoder for the PIP video playback. To my knowledge, Samsung doesn't have a 1.1 compliant Blu-Ray player out or scheduled to be out until their dual format player in mid December. The BD-P1400 was released before Oct 31, 2007 so it did not have to be 1.1 compliant. They scrapped the BD-P2400 because it would not be ready for the 10/31/07 release date, so they are either scrapping it completely or putting it on the shelf and retooling it so it is 1.1 compliant.

Picture in picture? Fuck that! That is an incredibly lame feature on TVs that few people use and it's even more useless on a disc player. "I need to watch the beginning and end of the same movie simultaneously!!!!111!one!!" Please.

The PIP is just one of the features, and it would be used mostly for different angles, video commentary or story boards...something most people don't care about, but if the discs are going to have all this extra material to make the movies more interactive, I'm all for it. The 2nd video decoder would allow the player to play the commentary with the movie without needing to make a 2nd copy of the movie w/a video commentary window, thus freeing up more space. How one laser can read more than one thing is beyond me, but this is what I heard the profile 1.1 accomplishes for the most part. I don't know what profile 2 is all about, but I hope its strictly software related or Blu-Ray will lose a lot of people.

Brad,

Per the Samsung website regarding the BD-P1400:

* Playback Formats : VC-1/MPEG2/H.264/HD JPEG/MP3
* BD Profile : 1
* HDMI CEC : Y
* HDMI Outputs(Version) : 1.3

If I want interactivity I'll play a videogame. Movies are a passive form of entertainment.

So let me get this straight; with a format war going on between HD-DVD and Blew-Ray and with hi-def players only penetrating .9% of the market, Blew-Ray, after only being introduced, what, only two years ago, has ALREADY changed it's format so there are two DIFFERENT and INCOMPATIBLE "Profiles" existing and some poor joe schmo out there is supposed to go looking on packaging to see if a disc is Profile 1 or Profile 1.1 (they didn't even have enough sense to make it 1 and 2....they made it 1.0 and 1.1?)? What are these effin people on crack?!

Here's how I understand it:

Profile 1.0 - no PIP for extra content

Profile 1.1 - PIP for display of alternate video in PIP window, 256MB local storage

Profile 2.0 - Internet, 1GB local storage

Supposedly all disks should still play on 1.0, it's just that you can't use the advanced features . . . . . we'll see if that holds true.

I wonder if there is a similar progression for HD-DVD?
