It brings nothing new to the discussion -just more flame bait. The article would only be worthy if it had any real news to report, such as announcing specific retailers going Blu-Ray exclusive or perhaps getting the scoop on when Paramount, Dreamworks and Universal will start releasing movies in Blu-Ray format. quote: Joe Redifer Rumor is that MicroSoft will be introducing a BluRay add on for their Xbox 360 soon I've read rumors about that as well. It will help stores simplify their stocking decisions over what movies to carry on the floor. With HD-DVD not taking up floor space that will leave more room for a greater, growing variety of Blu-Ray titles. The current negative economic situation in the US will certainly affect sales numbers. However, I think sales of BluRay players and BD movies will increase very dramatically by this fall -if that doesn't occur even earlier. BluRay players will be selling in huge numbers for the Christmas shopping season. By that time, many of the Summer 2008 hits will be arriving on BluRay. I think Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal will be releasing on BluRay by then at the latest. He sent away for the 5 free HD DVDs. What he got back was interesting. It was a letter that said they were currently out of stock and would make every attempt to send out his 5 HD DVDs as soon as they were in stock, but that it could take awhile. The also graciously offered to cancel his order if he so wished. Yeah. Cancel an order for something that's free. He assumes they will never be "in stock" again because they probably won't make anymore since HD DVD failed like Dustin "Screech" Diamond.  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." One of the CC stock clerks was removing a few dozen HD-DVD discs off the sales floor to return to the distributor. Maybe the friend of yours could have snagged some discs. CC had one HD-DVD player model on display next to several different BluRay models. I saw several people buying HDTV sets (mainly for the Super Bowl) and including BluRay players with the purchase. Didn't get Burnout Paradise, but I'll have to check it out. Got a copy of Call of Duty 4 (the salesman gave a good discount on it and three BluRay movies). I probably would have bought the new Unreal Tournament game if they had it in stock. BTW, the XBox360 demo at Circuit City was out of order. Red Ring of Death problem. I'm not enjoying the goodness of Blu-Ray and surfing the 'net for porn on PS3 just yet. I had to buy a new TV stand for this gear. That stand is now assembled. I'll be able to move the new TV and other components onto that stand either tomorrow evening or Saturday (when one of my friends comes over to help me safely lift and move that equipment). The BD movies I bought were Ratatouille, Casino Royale and Bladerunner. I forgot the BD release of Bladerunner had 5 discs. Pleasant surprise. Looked like a 2-disc container. I'll spend some of the weekend figuring out how to enable/disable that 120Hz "motion flow" thing. Some of the newest TVs have 120Hz refresh. It seems pretty nice for sports and stuff shot with video cameras. But it makes most film-based content, or anything 24fps, look pretty weird -like the show is playing in fast forward without actually being in fast forward.  |  IP: Logged Joe Redifer You need a beating today Posts: 12859 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: May 99 posted 02-01-2008 01:02 AM                        It can interpolate frames. It can also show the same frame 5 times on 24fps material, like a 5 bladed shutter. Force 24p output over HDMI from the PS3. Also it says hdmi A is the cable is that new or is it the one I already have in use? Come on I want to buy this but I don't want to have update to a new TV 13 months after my last one! Your Blu-Ray player will talk to your TV over the HDMI cable when it is first setup and see that it maxes out at 1080i. Otherwise you can tell the Blu-Ray player in the setup menu what resolutions you have. You'll be fine. If you want better than stereo sound, you'll have to run a cable from the optical or coaxial ports of the Blu-Ray player unless you have an HDMI receiver. Also if that is the case your Blu-Ray player can't talk to the TV over the HDMI, so you'll have to tell it the proper resolutions.  |  IP: Logged Mike Schindler Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1039 From: Oak Park, IL, USA Registered: Jun 2002 posted 02-01-2008 05:57 PM                     Most (if not all) players allow you to choose the resolution you wish to output, so you should be okay from that standpoint. When you do get it, be sure to try out both resolutions, regardless of your TV's native resolution, because you can never really be sure which will look the best on your TV. EDIT: Joe beat me to it. It's a big jump going from a 32" RCA CRT monitor to a 52" 120Hz 1080p LCD HDTV. As I'm writing I have the Blu-Ray version Casino Royale playing from my PS3. Getting things set up just right took a bit of scanning through various menus of settings, which wasn't easy considering I'm a complete newbie at using any Playstation console controller. I did buy a Bluetooth remote for playing BD movies, but haven't gone through the steps of downloading latest firmware and "registering" it with the console yet. Anyway, I have the PS3 connected directly to the TV via HDMI input 1. I have an optical cable going from the PS3 to my old Yamaha receiver. I wasn't getting any sound at first, but then I went into system settings, checked under audio output options and found where I could switch audio output from HDMI to optical and "turn on" output of Dolby Digital and DTS. Still not done with everything on my setup. Have to call the folks at Dish Network to get my service upgraded and get that HD DVR. Going to look into getting a rooftop antenna for picking up free over the air HDTV signals.  |  IP: Logged Joe Redifer You need a beating today Posts: 12859 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: May 99 posted 02-01-2008 11:22 PM                        As far as the PS3 controller goes, a good thing to remember is that X is usually "confirm" and O is usually "cancel/back". Use the d-pad to scroll through menus (not either of the analog sticks) since it is a bit easier that way. Also you can charge it up by plugging the USB cable into your computer, as it will not charge when the PS3 is off. The round PS button in the middle of the controller turns the system on and off (when held). Hold down this button to quit games as you play them as well. Also make sure any noise reduction on your TV is set to OFF and you don't want to turn the sharpness up too much. If you use the THX thingy included on some DVDs, they tell you to turn the sharpness up so it seems kind of edgy, but not too edgy. THX is super-accurate with their setup and descriptions. My first impressions aren't bad. Using the controller to do things is really hard to get the hang of, but I guess for the video game generation, such controllers are more natural than cell phones. I've ordered the Blu-wave remote from Nyko for $13 because using the controller for watching movies is an exercise in frustration. I'm hoping that device allows me to control most of the functions (save the power on/off) from my Pronto so I can shelve the controller. As expected, the audio and video quality was superb! The 40GB PS3 has a little fan noise, but it's not audible from more than a couple of feet away. I've ordered up copies of Cars and Terminator 2 (had to get this, since I have just about every version they've released, and the collection just wouldn't be complete). I like the fact that the PS3 can download trailers from the PlayStation Network, and that I can play videos on my local network (still getting the hang of which formats it wants to see). I haven't been able to get it to play my music, but it might be a format or media server issue, but that's a minor issue. Unfortunately, I had to return the game unplayed. It's a reminder of why I don't rent stuff from Blockbuster, as I often don't have the time to do things that I think I will. $8 to rent a game I never played sucks, but it wasn't a big priority for me. I'm going to look through the online stuff and see if there is anything there worth downloading that doesn't cost $50 like the in-store games do. I'd like to find something simple for my 7-year-old to play. One thing I've noticed is that at least Ratatouille doesn't have the ability to bookmark a place in the movie. We ended up watching it in two segments, and I couldn't find a way to set a bookmark like I'm used to being able to do on HD DVD's. Can anyone point me to a feature I'm missing? The feature is disc-dependent on HD DVD (but most have it), so I'm thinking that it just wasn't on Ratatouille.  |  IP: Logged
