Eh. The Mummy. Is that the best they can do? Sad.

So is the PS3 DTSHDMA/DTSHDHR compatible? My update only said things about the Playstation store, and nothing about DTSHDMADTSHDHR.

Yes, it is DTS-HD Master Audio compatible.

However, the System Update 2.3 verbiage said nothing about DTS-HD. It was all about the new front end of the Playstation Store.

Had to see for myself, so I selected HDMI output for the audio, loaded Independence Day and checked the technical info thingie the PS3 displays about the movie. The DTS-HD MA labeling shows up along with a higher bit rate. Too bad I could only hear the audio out of my TV's speakers with that setting. The PS3 won't output the lossy core and lossless audio track at the same time. So I'll have to change those settings in a few months when I buy a new receiver. At least the decoding works...

...well, almost.

There is apparently some glitches in how the decoder is handling certain DTS-HD 7.1 channel mixes on certain New Line and Lionsgate discs. And when you look in the PS3 system credits, the DTS logo now shows up as "DTS-HD Master Audio/Limited." What's up with this "limited" crap? It's making me wonder if the internal PS3 decoding of this format is somehow watered down versus what you get in standalone Blu-ray players and A/V receivers.

If you don't include movies produced or directed by Steven Spielberg, Universal Pictures' catalog of titles for the past 20 years isn't all that great. IMHO, it's one of the reasons why HD-DVD wound up losing the format war. Non-Spielberg titles and Paramount/Dreamworks titles as exclusive content wasn't enough to compete.

As long as I can have Flower Drum Song, Airport, and Casino on the blue disc I'll be happy. Get the lead out Universal! [Big Grin]

I would be happy if they would release "Airport" as a regular DVD. As of now it's only available in a box set with all the stupid sequels which I have zero interest in.

Apparently it is still available in widescreen DVD:

Still would like to see that opening credits sequence on Blu-ray.

I have the single wide screen DVD of Airport. Its a hoot to watch as is the John Wayne epic "The High And The Mighty"... which was really the first airplane disaster epic. Both are excellent transfers with High And Mighty having a cleaned up "Chase" sound track. Airport was shot in 65mm and the transfer far as I know is not form those elements but they were nice elements anyway.

Man... those old DC-6 "flying hardware stores" are so cool! The pisser is that they shouda used a Constellation in the film, its a very sexy plane to look at. The Constellation was also a much more famous plane having set many speed and distance records. Wilbur Wright took his last plane ride in a "Connie" shortly before he passed away. One has to wonder what was going through his mind during that flight.

Mark they used the D-6 because of the flying distance The Constellation could fly 3,500 miles on one fulling so the point of no return (very important in the movie) would have been about 400 or 400 or 500 miles off the coast instead of just over half way.

Oh and a true story of a bomb blowing in a DC-6 up over Longmont CO became the basis of another story used several years later. Of course in the other story they saved everyone. Gee I can't remember the title of that one now one now!

Edited:
Okay looked it up it was a TV movie (and a very good one) called Doomsday flight. It was written by, who know airplanes quite well! The bomb was hidden in place that avoided detection (and actually might get by today even what a thought). The bomb was pressure sensitive once you went over 5,000 if you dropped back below 5,000 it would go off. They landed at Stapleton International Airport Denver (mile high get it) but they could have landed at Colorado Springs almost 1,500 feet higher but you know got to cut it close.

Naw... Long range Connies had auxillery wing tip tanks of 600 gallons each as can be seen in the picture... so it coulda easily made it with reserves to spare.

 -

BTW: The first DC-6 that crashed occured during an emergency landing at Bryce Canyon Airport. The plane almost made it but lost control just 10 feet above the runway and crashed on nearby BLM land.

Mark do you have a comprehension problem? I said the Connie had to great a distance to have a point of no return problem. Even with out wing tip fuel tanks they had 3500 miles so the point of no return was to great! It's travel distance was much further than the DC-6 so no engineer worried he made a mistake. They could travel to many miles it could go much further than a DC-6.

Still don't understand? Should I say it slower? Yes it could go further than the DC-6! That was the point of not using it, the Connie! I'm saying the Connie did not have to worry if they were to tight on fuel while the DC-6 did. DC-6 problem with fuel and have to be sure you can make it Connie no problem with fuel.

Another way to put is the DC-6 was traveling it's greatest distance and fuel was a factor to worry about. On the other hand the Connie would have no fuel problem! The DC-6 had a significantly shorter route that it could fly. The Honolulu to San Francisco route was stretching the fuel capacity about as tight as you could!

I thought it was clear that was what I was saying but then maybe you just wanted to disagree with it!

Looks pretty clear to me!

Also Wilbur Wrights thoughts on his last flight were far more pleasant than Willie Post last thoughts on his last flight! [Smile]

Ron...
They only fill em up with calculated amounts of gas and then some for a given trip... and indeed this is shown at the beginning of the film when they sign for the calculated amount of fuel to safely make that trip. The Connie with its wing tanks AND wing tip tanks full had a 1000 mile longer range than the DC-6 with its tanks full, the two Airlines had to compete after all! Hence I see both planes as being equal in the distance capability department based on the fact thet each is only getting its required calculated amount for that trip. The Connie was just alot more sexy looking plane as some might say. The DC-6 was always smug looking... when they went to the DC-7 Douglas lost that smug look. Also, they could have used a standard Constellation since it also had a great enough flying distance... they would not have needed the Super Constellation which is the model with wing tip tanks.

To get accurately technical about it with a full load o gas the DC-6 had a range of 4,605 miles, The 1945 Connie had a range of 3000 to 4000 miles depending on which version of the engines it was equipped with, the Super Connie had a range of 5400 miles with the wing tip tanks. No Doubt that sleek shape of the Connie sure paid off in fuel savings! Now the DC-6 would have given a more closed in feeling since the Connie had so much more head room... perhaps thats one reason they chose it.

There's a guy at Wolk named Connie... Not much to say about Blew Ray... there haven't been really any decent releases lately... I think they are playing catch up now. So lets talk planes again... [thumbsup] .
