Elvis Navas Film Handler Posts: 13 From: Caracas, Venezuela Registered: Apr 2003 posted 04-23-2003 01:27 PM                     I am Elvis Navas (alias "el pitufo", by Giorgio Volpi, my ancient master) I've worked in changeover theater from 1996 but I've been in a booth since 8 years old (actually I'm 25), I'm working to cinex multiplex since 2000 and I begun as projectionist in a 4 screen theater, then I worked as assistant of projection supervisor. Now I'm Projection Supervisor. I have to my charge 56 screens ( 15 of them christie's ) and 49 projectionist . I'm especialist rebuilding centuries, actually I'm rebuilding a Microtecnica Export (old italian projector).  |  IP: Logged Michael West Film Handler Posts: 67 From: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Registered: Apr 2000 posted 04-26-2003 11:54 AM                        i became a licensed and unionized projectionist in 1982 when i was 19 (just as we were getting rid of the carbon arcs and tube amps) so my learning curve was vast. i worked part-time and this trade helped pay my way through art college - although i was a serious worker and found the trade fascinating, i had no real intentions of becoming "full-time" but.... 15 years later and between jobs i "wound up" at our new imax where i have been for almost 5 years! - still a member of the union but working without a contract for this non-union multi/imax. i still have great respect for the union (at least in theory) although i am afraid we have become an old film veterens club.  |  IP: Logged Paul Salley Expert Film Handler Posts: 105 From: Liberal, Kansas Registered: Jan 2001 posted 04-30-2003 05:03 PM                  Been in the business since I was 15, which I started out tearing tickets. I'm new to the board, but have been reading your posts for some time now. I was so thrilled to have finally found a place online for cinema enthusiasts like me. A bit of my background...I have been working in the "industry" all of my career. I started out as an usher at the GCC Eastland Mall Cinema in the summer of 1987. That theater is still open, but now under different independent ownership. From there, I managed the Super Saver Cinemas 7 (second run theater) from 1988 to 1996. The projection equipment used was Cinema Systems. My fondest memory was a Xenon bulb exploding inside the projector and having to sweep that up for days and days. I dropped out of the movie biz for a couple years, but then returned to help open the booth at the Hollywood Palace 12 in Tulsa. Nice booth, two levels complete with our own private elevator. All auditoriums are THX certified. All projectors are Christie. Not a bad booth at all, although the lower level was more crowded thanks to the employee break area and management office. Currenly, I am the print media director for George Grube Advertising in Oklahoma City. I place all of the movie co-op newspaper ads for just about everyone except Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. You can see my handy work (at least just dropping sigs into the bases) in OKC, Tulsa, Norman, Lawton, Shawnee and Wichita, KS. I really do enjoy my job here. Although, I do miss being in a projection booth or even managing a theatre. I believe that once you have that movie blood, you can't really do anything else in your career. General manager of Cinema 5 in Sioux Center, IA which opened on April 25th of this year. Prior to that GM of Paramount Theatre in Indianola, IA (3 screens and adjacent video rental store) Before that managed a single screen and video store in Cherokee, IA (my home town). Cherokee is where I started at 15 (1994)as a concessionist. Worked up to assistant mangager then went to college to save the world as a police officer and graduated. Loved the theatre, missed it every day when I didn't work on college breaks. Came back to manage. All of the above with Fridley Theatres based in Des Moines, IA 106 screens, apr. 45 locations and 10 video stores. I am about 95% hobbyist, 5% contract projectionist. The hobbyist side of me works with a slowly evolving home setup, currently a Simplex E-7 on an RCA 9030, with a Magnarc (burning carbons as God and J.E. McAuley intended!) for light. I also have other 35mm projection equipment I can swap out or rebuild when the urge strikes. Since I originally started with 16mm (way back in fourth grade), I also have a collection of 16mm sound projectors, mostly for nostalgia's sake. I also do projectionist work (that's the remaining 5%) for both the San Diego Latino Film Festival and the San Diego Asian Film Festival, currently held at the Madstone Theatres Hazard Center. (Both festivals are produced by non-profit organizations; I work as an independent contractor for these organizations, not as a Madstone employee.) In the past I have done other contract projectionist jobs, including gigs for the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art from 1991 until 1994, where I got quite a Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation fix in the process. (Oh yes, I also wok full time as a computer and audio-visual suppport specialist for a local university.)  |  IP: Logged Mike Olpin Chop Chop! I have been doing this for about 7 years now. I have ran three different theaters in ND. I currently manage a 7-plex. I enjoy older movies and cartoons. I think it is so cool that I can work in a business that can take us from the real world for a few hours and totally entertain us and make us leave happy. Every night when I leave work I stop to watch the customers leave smiling, crying or laughing. ISN'T IT GREAT?
