I have been with the company for 9 1/2 years and have been in the booth for about four years. I was an 'Operations Coordinator' (like an hourly assistant manager)when I was transferred to the booth. I am a recent co-owner/operator of a 'historic' theater in this small BC town of Powell River. Being very green in the aspect of projectionist I have yet to learn a lot more about judging by the content in the threads here but have already come to appreciate what I have already gleaned. I'm a private collector who used to live in Essex, UK, where I ran a pair of Gaumont-Kalee 19s with 2000' spool boxes and home-built 750W tungsten lamphouses. Since moving to Wales I haven't had space to set up a GK-19, but I'm hoping to buy a Cinemeccanica Victoria 4 in September which ought to fit somewhere... I'm particularly interested in telecine techniques and amplifier design, and have found reading these fora fascinating. I've been lurking around this site since August and have finally been approved to post so what better first post than introducing myself. I've been in the theater business since November 1997 when I was still in high school. November 1997- January 2004 I worked for General Cinema which of course became AMC. May 2001- In addition to my duties as a regular floor staff employee, I was promoted to non-union projectionist, which just meant I learned how to thread and start the movies and how to build and tear them. Our union guy didn't like to teach any non-union any more than that. Which was understandable because the company was cutting back on union hours and wanted to completely do away with union but couldn't due to lack of knowledge of the non union, so as long as I didn't know any more than basics then there would still be a need for a union guy. A year after that I was promoted to Crew Trainer, which due to the size of our theater (a sixer) I was more like an assistant manager, I just didn't have access to the safe. December 2002 I was asked to become a full time manager but I turned it down because I was in college full time and about to start a full time internship that I needed for course credit. Besides they were only offering me 50 cents more than what I was currently making. Sadly January 2004 our theater closed and due to shady theater politics I was unable to transfer to another location in town. February 2004 I joined the dark side so to speak. I got a job at Kerasotes Theaters. I started out as a blue hat, or a smurf, which is what we call our floor staff. Quickly, due to my previous experience, and due to my hard work for the company so far and my ability to adapt from working a 6 screen theater to a 16 screen theater, I was moved to shift manager by May. Shift managers main responsiblity is projectionist but they also help out on nightly inventory and on regular floor positions if we are short handed on blue hats. March of 2005 I was promoted to salaried manager and a week after that I was given the job of hiring for our location. My I'm Christopher Schneider. I'm a Cinematographer who is currently looking for a movie to shoot, or other related work. I've been a projectionist for nearly 4 years on Norelco, Century, and Symplex heads in one of the largest film archives in America. I'm also the Senior Projectionist for the Winston-Salem Cinema Society for which I've been one of several key projectionists for the Riverrun Internation Film Festival. Like I said in the other post, I'm a big film fan, love projecting, and tend to be long winded. I got in to the Film Society there and recently graduated to a full projectionist for the society. I live in Newark Delaware, and i first started my job as a concessionist in october 2003, and I became a projectionist in summer 2004. We run two Century C's from 1942, with DTS and 2000watt bulbs. I also work at SAW video a (video co-op) and I'm also a filmmaker. I started in the movie business when I was 13, slowly working my way from popcorn lackey to projectionist/supervisor for 2 BCG/Cinema Management Theatres in Conway, NH. I've been doing projection work for almost 5 years of the 9 I've been in the business. Shortly, I will be moving to another projection position in southern NH to work for an indi company (O'Neil Theatres). I hope to return to ownership myself by opening a theatre here in the Seattle area.  |  IP: Logged William Sartore Film Handler Posts: 6 From: Bethel Park, PA Registered: Nov 2005 posted 11-07-2005 12:16 PM                     Bill Sartore Ex-projectionist for about twenty-some years now Pittsburgh, PA area Started out at the Colonial Drive-in with Simplex XL's and Ashcraft lamps. manual changeovers Later went to a new quad in Norwin for the afternoon shift (AA-II's ) then over to the Greater Pittsburgh Drive-In for the evening I think the projectors were Century but the thing I remember (and hate) most was having to use a double MUT as the sole transport mechanism. Hitting the HUGE screen tower with 3,000 watts EARLY in the evening wasn't much fun either. Naturally, the first feature had to be re-run since most of the people missed it since it started so early I finally got the Norwin Quad for the evenings for a few years prior to the chain going manager/operator. The circle of friends that I hung around with always made the distinction between "projectionists" and "operators". So . . . I've been out of the booth since the split photo cell was state of the art.  |  IP: Logged
