Chris Hipp Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1462 From: Mesquite, Tx (east of Dallas) Registered: Jul 2003 posted 10-03-2006 01:39 AM                     I was bored and reading through this thread when it occurred to me that I have never filled this out. I am 23 years old and have lived in Mesquite, Texas my entire life. I like to visit other places, but I doubt I will ever leave DFW for good. I first got started in the movie business on December 17, 1999 at the AMC Mesquite 30. I started out as a concessionist and worked all floor positions. In the spring of 2001, I was pretty burnt out and ready to quit. I decided to try the only job that I hadn't done, booth, before I quit. It just so happened that the job fit my personality perfectly, so I kept doing it. In March of 2003 I was promoted to the position of booth manager. Say what you will about AMC, but when I was in charge I made sure we had the best presentation possible and definitely put on the best show in the metroplex, for AMC's of course. I guess it paid off because in late 2004, Brad Miller offered me a job with the Studio Movie Grill. So I started working with him five years to the day after I started at AMC on December 17,2004. I work primarily as a projectionist, but I also assist Brad with tech work and installing the new theaters. My last day with AMC was January 7, 2005. I suppose I will continue to do projection work until 35mm dries up. Other than work I like to do anything that involves water. My main thing is SCUBA diving, but I also like to kayak and would love to learn how to surf. I'm also a gym junky, but my motivation has been lacking in the past few weeks. I currently live in the Chicago suburbs, but I'm from everywhere (Army brat). I first started as a floor staff employee but moved into management. Managers in my company are also projectionists, so that's how I got into projection. However, management didn't interest me half as much as the booth did. What's the point of counting money if it's not yours to spend, or bossing around kids if they aren't your kids? Why listen to people yelling at you to 'just rewind the movie' when you can't yell back? Management is overrated. I've only done projection for a year and a half, and have only worked on Strong and Christie projectors and Strong and Potts platters (there is very little difference between the last two). The film handling in my company is abysmal, but that's what you get when you train your managers in the booth for three weeks and move them on to 'more important' things. Outside of work, I am a computer geek, gamer, reader, and animal lover. I will soon be returning to college in Alabama to finish my IT degree, where I hope to work as a projectionist to pay the rent.  |  IP: Logged John Caswell Film Handler Posts: 35 From: Liverpool, Merseyside, UK Registered: Oct 2006 posted 10-17-2006 03:05 PM                     Hi, my names John, and I'm Chief Projectionist at 'Picturehouse at Fact' in The FACT centre, Liverpool, UK. Only been working in projection since 2003, but loving it. We run a Kinoton DP75 with Christie SLH lamphouse (3kw)which we use for 35mm and 5/70 in our main screen, also have a couple of Christie CP2000s, and our other screens all run Century's (2kws). I've lurked for a while and finally registered. DeeAnn Little Co-Owner, Shiny Object Digital Video, Sacramento, CA I currently work mostly in the "afterlife" for independent movies and documentaries for DVD/VOD/PPV. We also have a once a week public screening with an art gallery (digital projection/folding chairs, it's super microbudget) for some stuff that doesn't make it to the local theatres in the region. But I started out at GCC in 1987 at Sacramento Inn Cinema on Concessions and Door. Later I worked Box and did the weekly recordings. I really liked working at Sac Inn, it was probably the most overall fun job I ever had. Our manager left to run the Holliday(s) in Davis and we had an entire management change so then... I worked at U/A Arden Fair for a little while, but went back to GCC, this time at Birdcage Walk Cinema 6 for one of the former Asst. Managers at Sac Inn. It later became a dollar theatre. It was kind of a crazy place, but I liked it. I started out on Floor, but was promoted to CoFS. I eventually got burned out by the long-ish drive and traffic every day and some of the hours. That was it for working full-time in a theatre. I ended up working for one company in an entirely different field (Gov't information service provider and political analysis magazine) for 12 years, before leaving to start my own company in home video, but I've also volunteered at the Guild Theatre(independent) for earlier restoration attempts in the '90's, but we weren't able to pull it off. Luckily someone did and it's now fully restored. My husband and I wanted to try to re-open Sacramento Inn a few years ago after Landmark bought it from GCC but later closed it (it had been pretty much gutted but as far as we knew the building was still sound), but it had been sold (it's now just gone). I picked up a print at Birdcage once. I´m still an engineering student, and now also a student of philosophy (really close to my bachelor´s degree). I got my projectionist license at Hagabion in Gothenburg (a part of Folkets bio) and then got a position as a projectionist at SF which is the biggest chain in Sweden. After about a year I got to be the relief projectionist for the regular guy when he needed a weekend of at the Palladium which I really like, and will now start at half-time. It´s a big single (seating 770, built in 1918, with two nice old DP70´s). SF is currently building another multiplex in town, but luckily I wont be doing regular shifts there, just helping out from time to time. I also help out at Möllan bio, a small single in the next town over, with nice old AGA-projectors and a rod for change overs that physically moves a piece of plywood in front of the port window for the outgoing projector. I currently work for Landmark at the Tivoli Theatre in St. Louis. I've been working in theatres since the summer of 1992. During the last 14 years, I have worked at 2 drive in's and ten indoors. Of the indoors that I have worked at the most, I like the Tivoli and the Hi-Pointe. I am hopelessly enamoured with the way things used to be over how they are. I guess that I've spent the bulk of my career working between two 80+ year old buildings proves that. I started working concession and quickly moved into projection work. I was happy there until the laws of economics forced me into management. Now I'm happy doing both as long as the computer works in the office! I'm new to the business. I work for Classic Cinemas, which operates mostly in the Chicago Metropolitan area, with a few theatres located outside of the 'burbs. I've only been with the company since late August of this year. Currently I work with the president of the company and his assistant, and I also handle tenants with our rental properties owned under the parent company name, Tivoli Enterprises. I've managed so far to visit six of our twelve theatres (one is undergoing an expansion). I don't seem to have any good (and recent) pictures of myself atm, so I'll get one up as soon as I can. Our booth maintenance guy, Alan Gilbertson, is on here as well. So far, I'm really enjoying the work, and I'm finding all the stuff I'm learning that I never knew about the "industry" to be very interesting. Anyway, I'm more in the administration aspect than down in the trenches, but I still do a share of "trench" work. Our first movie was Beverly Hills Cop. Free. This is our 21st anniversary! I guess I'm not an amateur any more. My training was live theater but it's all show business. Chief engineer of a 50kw FM station in the 1970's while working with Altec Service Corp in this indusdry. (No station in town compares quality wise to what we had then.) Left Altec in 74; bought Hadden Theatre Supply in 1976. Been here ever since in a 20,000 sq ft bldg with 4 other employees. Full machine shop, full powder coat facility, fully automatic pick/place surface mount board production facility, 3 forklifts, etc. Hobbies: flying and great audio. Wife is retired high school teacher (German English, History, Psych) Daughter is 24 and a PSA (U.S. Airways) Air Lines co-pilot; youngest woman at the airline. We're a 9 screen cinema, a little big but still managing to have that family owned atmosphere. Seven of the nine projectors use endless loop christie platters, the other two Potts. I've been here for only two years but I love projection and the whole theatre business.  |  IP: Logged R.
