Position: Self-employed ebay seller 'drive-inbuff', have managed ag enterprises for 2 years - selling eggs & raising calves. No job-link to cinema industry as yet, although I have applied. I have been selling eggs to a local takeaway shop & my school since Feb 2004. Ebay seller since August 2005. I like money ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) .
More about me: Great uncle operated many cinemas in Aus; Ivan Stevens, passed away about 4 years ago, built the Horsham Drive-in in my logo in Victoria Australia, the Southport Drive-in in Queensland, Warrnambool & Wangaratta Drive-ins in Victoria, and the Gold Coast's Sundale Cinemas, Surfers Paradise Cinemas, and the Mermaid Twin. Quite an empire.
Why I'm here: To learn. I hope to follow in my great uncles footsteps one day. I know the cinema industry in Aus & the world isn't growing at all like in boom times, and in particular in Australia we just *lost* three more drive-ins this year, the last one to reopen here was in about 2001. But there's still a place for them, if you bring 'picture paddocks' to the people...
So please tolerate me, I'll try not to ask too many questions, I'll mainly read what others have written.

Hey, Frank, welcome to Film-tech! Long time no see! Anyways, my name is Jason Winn. I live in Mesquite, TX. I used to work at AMC Mesquite 30. I worked there for over a year, most of that time was spent in the booth. I loved working there. That was the funnest job I ever had (minus the last four months). It was time for me to move on.
Now, this may sound crazy to some of you, but I'm working towards my goal of one day becoming a professional wrestler. Go ahead and start laughing. I used to do backyard wrestling back in the day, now I wanna do the real thing. I started working out and I'm saving up my money, so, hopefully in the fall I can attend wrestling school. I'm planning on attending the pcw wrestling academy in Arlington, TX. Then, after several years of wrestling professionally, I want to start my own wrestling promotion. I'll be the next Vince McMahon. Also, I want to explore other business ventures, like maybe opening my own movie theatre. Just a thought, but it might happen. Yea, I know, I'm a big dreamer.
Oh, by the way, Frank, going out to clubs and picking up women. Yeah right!!!!!!!!

Gday, New recruit reporting. Just found the site and registered.
About me, I have been in the industry since I left school at 15, Now I just turned 50.
Started in Sydney as an assistant projectionist with Greater Union Theatres at the State theatre, a 2300 seat 3 level picture palace built in 1925 equipped with Kalee 19 heads and base with peerless carbon arcs.
In those days an assistant's job was to clean the machines, thread and rewind film and show slides (glass, wide screen)and operate the dimmer rack (one large wheel linked to 56 individual dimmers). We did not dare do a change-over.
I left greater union 12 months later to spend the next 6 years working for Hoyts and then Village cinemas. I have operated every projection room that Hoyts had up until 1977 as I was the Holiday relief operator, (as all operators were controlled by the head office engineering Dept all annual leave was rostered one at a time, there were two of us doing the relief, a month at a time, most people here have 4 weeks annual holiday). So accordingly, I moved every month to a different location (oh joy) just when you had everything running ok and cleaned.
I was promoted to city operator at the Sydney Plaza (Sydney's home of Cinerama)the machines were still in place but no longer used (now happily residing in a friends garage in Sydney screening across the back yard to a outdoor screen). I went on to work in many different theatres and drive-ins in Sydney and Melbourne over the years whilst serving in the Royal Australian Air force.
I am now a Sheriff's Officer in Melbourne but travel all over Victoria.

OK then. I've been in semi-lurk for the last couple years without introducing myself. Excuses end now.
I'm from a small town near Reading, PA. For the last couple years, I went to school at Penn State, but I am currently at home so I can sort out a few problems.
I've never had a theater job, at least not yet. Actually, when I was younger, I was afraid of film. I always thought it would catch fire like nitrate. (I was also afraid of Peter Gabriel, to give you a sense of how silly my fears were.) I grew up in the post-AV-club age, when teachers set up projectors and VCRs themselves. Had there been a club, I would've been an AV geek. I'm fascinated with technical facts and physical/mechanical things (especially now that more things are being built with fewer moving parts).
I am still a "film handler," though, in the sense that when I was at school, I studied film. I was never too keen on theory; I was a bigger fan of production. When I graduate, I will probably continue studying film in some form: if not production, then preservation. (On DVDs of older films, I always watch the documentaries about the restoration process.)
I'm afraid of this digital revolution, mainly for two reasons:
a) as I said, I like physical, tactile products (and outdated media), because I know something's happening (cameras with film, CDs and record players, etc.), and I'm afraid that these motionless digital devices will wipe them out;
b) with digital technology, there is no physical "original," so the data can easily be lost by erasure or crash.
I'm already seeing the effects in photography: Polaroid's been discontinuing some of its film, black and white paper is becoming rarer (as is magnetic tape), digital cameras outnumber 35mm in most camera shops. All just friendly reminders that it's just a matter of time.
Anyhow, I'm rambling. I do that, too. Anything else you want to know about me will probably be found in past or future posts.
I'll let you know how the job search goes.

I started in showbiz as an actor, falling for too many lovely leading ladies. Rather than resting for most of the fifties, I earned my living in advertising. As the only pimply-faced youth to know how to operate a 16mm projector and a reel-to-reel tape deck, I put tv commercials together for the agency between running messages and marking up type. Later, because I could make a story board, I moved into the copywriting department. Over the years, I have been involved in producing industrial films on Super 8, 16 and 35 but most of my work involved writing.
However, I always yearned to operate a cinema. In 1968, my nightmare came true with the little single-screen we still run today. My creative writing has become a hobby with the cinema being a satisfying way of filling in seven days a week.
My position in our company is cleaner, ticket taker, projectionist and managing director. The cinema is located in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney and about ten minutes from a 10-screen major.
