I work at Nova Cinemas here in Palm Bay. I'm a projectionist. We don't have head projectionist, we are all equal-even to concession and ushers. I was a janitor at Nova, but wanted out of that and asked to be trained in booth. Started there in December. I really like what I do though and love this site. I have read over some manuals and tips already. Thought my first post here on film=tech should be here on this thread. Always interested in photography, I received a gift from the US Air Force and was assigned to the High Speed Instrumentation Unit at Holoman AFB at White Sands Missle Range. This was an R&D base located in the New Mexico Desert. Gun cameras, mapping cameras, ultra high speed cameras, RF4C and SR71 aircraft, was some of the neat stuff we played with. Moving from there home to Chicago, I started with RCA Service. I was assigned to south side of Chicago including the surrounding burbs. Theaters, film chains (broadcast), CCTV telecasts, were our responsibility. There were 5 techs assigned to the greater Chicagoland area. Three years later with a Bell Telephone PageBoy in my pocket I struck out on my own. Eventually capturing 80% of the Movie circuits in Chicago, I bought three theaters. Not a good move as I was a member of Local 110. Fed up with the weather I moved to Miami in 1977. Worked for 2 years for U.of M. in medical television. Back in theater work in 1980 I made a lot of special venue installations for the US Government. The Theater Industry has been a great career allowing me to travel extensively through out the world. However two years ago I was privileged to spend 3 days at sea on the USS Tennesee Boomer Class Sub. And I got to drive! Who am I… Paul Hemme, Long time lurker on the site and as Brad recently informed me, 4 years without a post! So to appease the “Retired from theatrical projection (for the second time) in 1998, maybe one day if Brad ever opens his own theater, I might return – if he’ll let me. Lived just about everywhere at one time or another. Currently without a regular cinema going experience since October 28, 1998. I’ve dabbled in film and television productions. Done production design concept art and models. Worked in theater design both commercial and home. Started and sold several businesses. Avid Film historian and preservationist. Enjoy watching good movies but most importantly I enjoy showing good movies to new audiences. Collector, climber, active outdoors. Strange sense of humor, and willing to go the extra mile for a laugh. Well, I haven't officially introduced myself, and now is the time for me to do so. I am a certified Film Projectionist at Pacific Theatres Grossmont Center Stadium 10 in La Mesa, CA. I simply love working in the booth. It's a passion for me. I've worked for other movie theatres as well. Anyway, I have learned a whole lot from this awesome website, from people who have put in so much insight in the forums. This is a great learning tool for me as an individual and I hope to continue learning and expand my horizons. Like I say, "Learning never ceases". So here goes. My name is Tim Rectanus and I am the Chief Projectionist at the IMAX Theatre @ Exploris in Raleigh, North Carolina. We are associated with a museum and our IMAX stuff goes a little something like this. 3D SR system with 1 QTRU w/ 4 upgraded decks to accommodate 72” platters and run DMR’d releases. We use our DTAC, SPICE, 8 Kodak Ektapro Slide Projectors and a powered CROWN lift for platter moves everyday. We also have a BARCO projector that we can run the video parts of Cable, DVD, VCR, Laptops, and whatever else we want to throw at it. XBOX 360 HD looks pretty darn good on it. There is also a stage in front of the auditorium that we can raise up for conferences and the such. We have 267 seats for our 53’ x 70’ screen. I started working here part time in 2001, a month after we opened, with no film/movie/theatre/booth experience at all. I love it here and I guess they like me too b/c I eventually convinced them to let me full time, then to Canada for Tech training, and then I took over the Chief position this past January. I have no knowledge of what /how things work in 35mm booths, but the interest is there so I will likely start checking area theatres out soon. As for outside of work, it goes family, friends, and sports pretty much. I will play or watch pretty much any sport. Basketball, Soccer, and Golf probably my favorites. ACC Basketball reigns supreme in this area and you can’t help but get into it. I am a UNC fan first, but am torn sometimes b/c my uncle played for NC State back in the day. The only thing that really matters though is, I always hate DUKE!!! Right now, Hockey is where it’s at though. The Hurricanes are comin’ for Lord Stanley’s cup. I was at Game 7 last night against Buffalo and it was ridiculous how loud that place got. I can’t really think of other thing to tell you so I guess that is it. Thanks for having me. Oh yeah, my sign is neon; I like short walks on concrete, staring at the midday sun, and have a penchant for buggery. I decided to skip out on AMC. And now I spend my time learning these Digital Projectors we run up here at Rave. I found out about Film-Tech from a projectionist on another Internet board when I posted a very long list of complaints that I have against movie theaters in San Diego county Before I found this board I had many misconceptions about movie projectionist including: 1)They are all trained how to use the machines. 2)They belonged to a union. 3)They cared. What I have found out instead is that many theaters make the floor manager or popcorn maker fun the films PLUS run the popcorn machine. Names Alex. Currently I work at the Evanston Cetury 12 & Cinearts 6 with a full Christie package. We have a bizarre booth layout with three separate booths that is run by two projectionists at a time. Theaters range from 85 to 460 seats. I have always been interested in film, the cinema and movie theaters as far back as I can remember. Working as a projectionist I have found is one of the only job types I seem to love. Its basically my playground. I started at an old twined 2-plex as an usher in 2001 and worked my way up to projectionist. It was run by a well-known and respected Chicagoan who knew how to run a theater with class and showmanship. Since then I've traveled around the area working at various theaters and companies discovering how different each one is operated. From an independent, to Landmark, a Crown, Loews(for 2 weeks.. yuk), two ghetto plexes then Regal and now Century its been a wild ride. I also work at Urban Outfitters during the day sometimes :-/ mainly for the discount. Out side of work I go to school and work on student films in sound design with a view good friends and mostly keep to my self. Also, I do stupid projects on my apartment, make good food and watch movies. I mean come on, every day I go into a large building with movies playing in 18 different rooms and make sure they look and sound great. ...Wait we all get paid to do this?! I work at Cineplex Odeon... er Loews Cineplex... er AMC Theatres! I'm an Operations Coordinator at my current location in Burlington, WA, an hour north of Seattle on the I-5 corridor. It still has Cineplex Odeon Signage outside, since it was built during the Loews/Cineplex merger in 1998. I got trained to do booth at the beginning of the AMC/Loews merger, but my Supervisory duties generally keep me out of booth, so with the exception of threading well enough to not make any really stupid show stopping mistakes, I'm not even comparable in experience to most of the people I've seen here. But, I guess you never do learn to fix a brainwrap until you actually have one right? I've been with AMC/Loews for 4 1/2 years, since April 2002. :-)  |  IP: Logged
