With the amount of "Reals" and "Antique 16mm Video Machines" just like that one I have around my house, I guess I will be the new worlds richest man once I sell them all off. Really tho, they are fun little projectors to keep around but even a newer and better 16mm projector is not worth that much. Most of the institutions who still use 16mm have upgraded to Elmo or Eiki making that old B&H stuff obsolete. They are a novelty to any film buff but I would NEVER run a good print thru one of those "auto-shredders". OT: Am I the only person who gets terribly annoyed when one calls REELS reals, wheels, or any other such bastardization of the word?  |  IP: Logged John Wilson Film God Posts: 5438 From: Sydney, Australia. Does $250 for a shutter high?...yes but so is the gynormous sum Strong wants for a new one. 3-wing shutters are not that plentiful and for a Simplex, not as easy as they are to make for a Century. And I know that I would get the right part the first time, unlike what happens when you order from Wrong Intl. Edited to add: Especially since the new ones have the openings cut incorerectly..I had to deepen the openings on a BRAND NEW shutter to get rid of a shadow on the screen in a short-throw screening room. (Too much material left at the base of the openings at the hub.) Sorry Dick, my friend, but as usual your listings are over-priced. Steve: I noticed that the shutter Dick is listing has "fan blades" on the backside. The 3-blade shutters I have don't have those...they are smooth on the backside. The listing is pricy, but about what I expect from a "company" selling as opposed to an individual. And good luck finding that part for under $300-400. anywhere else. To answer your question Phil. yes the type with the fan fins on the back will work with your 1014's. There might be a very slight reduction in aperture and film trap heat with the fins. The main thing to be careful of, especially in a short throw room, is that the openings are cut deep enough. There should only be about 4-6mm MAX of hub material in the bottom of each opening. And it is also critical that the blades not be warped or bent, which will result in a noticible flicker and the blade possibly hitting the light shield cover.  |  IP: Logged Steve Guttag We forgot the crackers Gromit!!! The current ones are machined and probably turn truer and are more balanced. Simplex always used the fins as a cheap means of cooling (similar to motors that have fins on the non-shaft side). One issue the cast shutters have always had is that they don't turn so true and are not balanced. The quick and dirty way of balancing was to cut some of the fins. To add weight, drill/tap a hole and screw a screw in. Believe it or not, you shouldn't feel any vibration when running a Simplex. Personally, I think the price is fair. 3-wing shutters are the lowest of the low volume items. For Centurys...we've had them made since they are just flat sheet metal (aluminum or steel...I prefer the steel ones). And as I mentioend in the last post, the new shutters aren't machined right..typical of Ballenswine. Monte: Since the last rebuilt movement I bought from Ballenswine was over $1,800 and wasn't even done correctly (the flywheel shaft had lots of endplay and the housing paint looked like it was done with a cheap brush and by a four-year-old) the $1,200 that LIT charges is quite reasonable.
